I have used this analogy before (and it's not necessarily the best analogy, but it's a reasonable demonstration of how things work).
Think of bandwidth like a highway. If you have a lot of traffic on the highway, there's a good chance of there being a traffic jam, particularly during peak times.
Let's say that there were previously two lanes on NG's proverbial highway. Now it's been upgraded to five. This doesn't mean that traffic will move any faster than it could when there's no traffic jam, as there's always speed restrictions on the highway (don't tell me about the Auto Bahn), it just means that the traffic will flow more smoothly for more of the time.
