people like you who feel obliged to pay out of your ass for intangible products are the reason the rest of us have to put up with products being nine parts commercialized puke and one part quality, you're a real saint

Who's obligated? The last mentality I wanted to associate myself with was mindless, perpetual consumerism, especially one where I feel obligated to buy a product. But surely the way to combat the "commercialized puke" is not to outright steal products from this industry. Voting with your wallet is one thing; theft is another entirely.
The PC industry enjoys much less creative and commercial restriction than its console brethren, and opens smaller or independent developers to a bigger audience. There are no tiny developers on the consoles. The problem is that the quality games and companies are subject to the same piracy as the rest.

I complete agree with you. I hate it when people use emulators and stuff. Why do it? Why not experience the game on the console?
The purpose of most emulators is to replace the original hardware. For example, if your Super Nintendo were to break down, then it can be replaced with an emulator. Another plus with emulators is that it outputs games at a superior quality; even more so than the original hardware. It's a lot like Communism; It's a good idea, it just hasn't been potrayed well yet.
Also, if you download it for free, that does not support the company.
This is true, however emulation is 100% legal if you own the original hardware and software. Also, companies do not get revenue from older games unless they are distributing it themselves in any way. So, unless it's on Virtual Console, no company is losing any of their profits to emulation.
Blatantly pirating new games, however, cannot be remotely justified. If you pirate Wii games, then you are stealing.
If everybody in the world downloaded torrents for their games, I bet Nintendo would go bankrupt or something for not making a profit off that game.
Read it up, read it up, read it up yo.

Look, I'm not trying to be an asshole. I would honestly love to hear opinions on the merits and benefits of videogame piracy if anyone has the time to write them out and have a rational discussion. My only request is that we leave out incompetent jingles like "I can't afford games so I pirate them."
Hell, I respect someone who tells me, "Why pay for something you can get for free?" At least they have the balls to stand firm as a pirate.

I wasn't going to reply to this thread but whatever....
You admit you download illegally yet you sit here on your high horse and put others down for doing the exact same thing you are doing. Regardless of wither or not they make excuses for what they do and you admit to it doesn't change the fact that you are just as guilty and have no stand to criticize and lecture anyone.
People are going to do what they want to do regardless of consequences. Personally I don't give a damn how good a game is...I'm not going to pay 60 dollars for less than 8 hours of entertainment. Hell halo took a long as time to beat and I still wouldn't spend that much on it. I wait for the price to drop down to anywhere between 10-20 bucks. I'm sorry but half the games out there aren't worth the price they charge people for them. If people download so fucking what...if it was at a reasonable price people wouldn't download. If schmucks wouldn't pay out the ass for consoles then games themselves wouldn't be as high as they are now.
Personally, a limited download for games out there should be available for people to decide if they want it. I can't count how many times people believe the hype on how "awesome" a game is and 4 hours later they are ready to put their foot through the screen and set fire to the store they bought the game from. ANYWAY bottom LINE STFU YOU AREN'T ANYONES PARENT OR LAWFUL AUTHORITY TO TELL ANYONE SHIT! That goes for the op to..STFU fucking backseat police.

My friend torrents all his games, he has a bunch. I don't even want to torrent, I only download emulated games from older generations that I already bought, like I have Mega Man 2 on cartridge, but I usually play it emulated because it runs faster and smoother. My NES has gone to shit.

At the risk of being banned, I'd just like to say that I do download some games online.I can honestly say that I treat it like renting a game; if I like it, I'll delete the pirated version and go buy. But if I didn't enjoy the game, I delete and never buy it.
What I do may seem a little immoral to others, but I think it's fair. Why buy something if you're not so sure if you're going to enjoy it?

Mo-ni, I can agree with a lot of what you said. I realize that my general anti-pirate stance is odd for someone who sometimes pirates media himself.
But with this hypocrisy aside, I'm not telling or advising anyone to do anything. I'm just talking.
And THIS -
At 8/2/10 04:57 PM, Mo-ni wrote: if it was at a reasonable price people wouldn't download.
...is horse-shit. Horse-shit! So much reality is being suspended here. Pirates are pirates, and they aren't just video games pirates. They're not just movie or software pirates; they're pirates! Pirates will happily grab Photoshop and Premiere - multi-hundred dollar products - along with cheaper computer games, console games, DVDs, seasons of television shows, books, comics, software of all sorts, midget porn from Ukraine. You fuckin' name it. It's all free! Okay?
The average-Joe pirate is not going to change their stripes or habits based on a product's price; file size, maybe, but not price. They steal because it's fuckin' free! All pirates, with the exception of a rare few, are not stealing because they are anti-authoritarian consumer crusaders on a vigilant fight against transnational corporations for economic justice and equity. THEY STEAL BECAUSE IT'S FUCKIN' FREE AND THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT.
I've paid attention to the opinions and demeanor of scores upon scores of people throughout my life and have found this to be accurate. And you know what? That's fine. I enjoy stealing immensely. But I do not do so with an artificially clear conscience obtained by blaming my actions on the very market I am stealing from and pretending it's THEIR fault that piracy is rampant!
"I'm sorry but half the games out there aren't worth the price they charge people for them."
I agree with that wholeheartedly but I'm not going to bullshit myself into believing that's a moral loophole that justifies my theft of those games.
A game is not a commodity. You don't need it. It's not food or water or resources. It's a product, and even argued by some to be art. And when I steal it, I know that I'm taking a chance and breaking the law. It escapes me how someone can be so deluded into thinking that piracy supports a rational position towards videogames.
Console games are expensive because they're on a console, which is a machine essentially designed for portability and ease-of-use but one which will unintentionally and inevitably fuck you out of your money. One cannot develop games for the consoles easily, or develop games themselves (indie games), or play games for free. But games are developed for that machine for years afterward and the console doesn't require you to update your console with improved parts. So of course this is reflected in the price; what else are you going to buy for it? Pricing structures are almost always out of the developer's hands. On the computer, things are different.

I'm not talking about books, movies, programs...don't even get me STARTED on programs or anything else. We are talking about games. Maybe it is horseshit and maybe it isn't It doesn't change the fact the main reason most people download games is because A. they don't want to waste money or B. They are cheap as hell or C. Just cause they like pissing off the "man". If you wanna bring in porn People don't download porn because of the price and YOU KNOW IT.
The average-Joe pirate is not going to change their stripes or habits based on a product's price; file size, maybe, but not price. They steal because it's fuckin' free! The average "joe" pirate does it because he can and for no other reason. I'm not saying people are justifying WHY they download. They are merely giving a reason on why they chose to do it. They know darn well they can get in trouble. For example music: There are a rarity of CD's out there were the entire album is good. I stopped buying music *no i do not download music*. Why because out of 12-20 songs only 2 or 3 MAX on average is worth listening to and the rest of the album is full of garbage songs or fucking skits. You think anyone is going to shell out 20 bucks for 10 minutes of listening music you are nuts. Getting away with downloading is not because its free...not entirely anyway. PEOPLE DO IT for the convience and the whole feeling of "you aren't going to rip me off again" I for one won''t shell out thousands of dollars for a damn thing that isn't something a life necessity. YOU DOWNLOAD TO so why do you sit here and speak all this. You can't put others down since you do it to. That's like saying "You thief, stealing is wrong you shouldn't do it." and all the while you are stealing as well. Don't point the finger at someone when you can just as easily be the one being pointed at.
You honesntly think the companies you are defending aren't ripping people off? Stealing ideas from competiton? Half the games out there are cheap imitations of a previously released game.
Just because you ADMIT openly you steal doesn't change the fact that you indeed steal and continue to do so at your leisure while at the same time chastising others who do it. There is no hypocrisy aside. Unless you are innocent of ever downloading you don't have a leg to stand on and shouldn't say a word on what others should and shouldn't do.
"I'm sorry but half the games out there aren't worth the price they charge people for them."
I agree with that wholeheartedly but I'm not going to bullshit myself into believing that's a moral loophole that justifies my theft of those games.

You make a valid point but it is void because you are one of the millions who steal. If you ever get caught your statement can't be "yes i stole i know its wrong. i'm not going to delude myself into trying to justify why i do it' and think they wont treat you the same way as all the others who steal.
You wanna know the type of people who do get off for doing the same crime as other people informants and snitches.
Console games are expensive because they're on a console, which is a machine essentially designed for portability and ease-of-use but one which will unintentionally and inevitably fuck you out of your money. Yeah and people are willing to pay 500 dollars for a pair of jeans that uses about 4-8 bucks worht of materials. you ain't solely paying for the product bud you are paying for the name as well as supply and demand. Prices on games and consoles are what they are because people are WILLING TO PAY the price that's slapped on it. If we were really paying for what you just said then when a newer version comes out the price wouldn't go down now what it. When playstation one came out it cost what over 150? and as time went on and its popularity decreased it went down to 25 dollars to not able to find. You are deluded if you think you are paying for the product based on materials, labor to put it together and machinery.

once people stop buying viedogames, then the companies who make them will have to come up with something else to flog in their place- T-shirts and the like.
also, they could sponsor tournaments and crap, get money from sales of various items at the tournaments.
I think it would actually inject a bit of creativity back into videogames, something which has been lacking somewhat recently.

The only torrent I've ever used for a game was for Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 platinum edition.
About 2 years ago, I had actually bought the game, but I let a friend of mine borrow it. She ended up moving to Florida and taking my game with her, and no way in hell I was paying 30 bucks for the game again.
Well, like, you couldn't, like, find it because, like, you're dumb, god

I use torrents to get TV shows mostly. Only ripped from TV. Minus the adverts.
My justification?
1. The ad revenue has already been paid. My watching adds no contribution.
2. I always get American ripped TV shows. I wouldn't have seen the advert in the first place.
3. If I really like the show, ill probably get it on DVD or blu ray. Did that with firefly, BSG, House etc.
4. Sometimes the show is out on Uk tv on the terrestrial channels (Freeview). I already pay my TV licence, I generally watch a show only once after I download it anyway, same as if I saw it on TV or on some iplayer, tv-catchup service.
