avoid a roommate at all cost!

I recently got out of a living situation with a roommate. I found him at one of my former jobs, he appeared to be a kind, accommodating guy so I naturally agreed to wake him up in the mornings for work because he did not have an alarm clock. Little did I know, he had no fatherly figure in his life and was trying to replace me with his dad.

As time went on, he would ask me to help him with small things like that more and more until I found out from my friends that he was telling them I was like his dad and then he began doing stuff like snapping on me and telling me he didn't want to do it. Naturally I was just confused as fuck and quit helping him and then I became a dick in his eyes.

I'd later come to find out that he was mentally ill and addicted to crack. He got fired from both his jobs and lost a catering gig that paid $300 a day to pursue his "movie/career". He utterly lacked artistic talent but swore up and down he was making a comic and writing a story.

I kindly asked him what his story was about and this is what he said "it's about a school for mutants, well not really mutants, but people with a mutated gene that allows them to have super powers, that are hated by the government and citizens of their nation. The main character, Knight, was raised by vampires and he has to go around killing cripple's (retarded people), this is his super power". Naturally I thought it was a joke but he began smoking pot and appeared to actually be writing this crap.

I asked him how many chapters he had written and he told me "like eight or nine, maybe ten, I don't even know" I asked to read it and suddenly he had only written part of one chapter.

He was also lazier than a motherfucker and would never do the dishes or take out the trash, he just went to the neighbors, smoked pot and complained about me and finally one day came running his mouth about how I was trying to be his father and began telling me I was fucking crazy, so I acted like a crazy father and beat his worthless ass.

Long story short, he couldn't pay rent and one day while smoking a joint, snidely told me I was going to have to spot him rent, I laughed, he disappeared and I ended up throwing all his shit away after he appeared to show up to pay utilities for three days, on the third day he returned, I took his money, he never saw his shit was gone but he did however tell me that he was now an assistant director for some bands music videos and that he was working at a respectable bar (he got fired from a position at Panera Bread and ended up working at the Twisted Taco).

In the end, he wound up coming back to the apartment when I was out of town and my friends were there checking my mail and found all his shit was gone, he threatened to call the police or some shit, cried, got put on suicide watch and I never heard from his dumbass again, the end.

For some reason, even when he didn't show up to pay utilities and I was forced to kick him out, half the people who knew of my situation said that same shit but alas, he was anything but sound and had an incredible disdain for retarded people.

I don't think one bad experience should mean you'd never have another roommate. I've had roommates that were douchebags and/or very annoying, in some part due to drug use, and it's just a matter of moving on after the experience is over. Your case is an extreme so know that it probably won't get worse than that if you got another roommate.

Roommates are awesome. I lived with 6 other guys in a college house last year and it was one of the most gratifying and hectic experiences of my life. And, surprise, none of 'em were addicted to crack.
