Hey everyone!

I've been thinking about this idea for a little while now, and I really hope you guys are interested. Pretty weird that it's already two years ago, but in 2008 I led the Cardboard City collab with Nick Deary and that went pretty well. I haven't led a big forum collab since, and I was kind of wanting to. So this is it.

GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS,

What I want to do with this project is create a typographic music video where everyone draws out and animates one word in the song Walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun. You can listen to that here. I chose it because it's got a whole bunch of words, and they go by at a good pace that wouldn't be too fast to show onscreen. Also I just like the song.

DETAILS?

This should be hand drawn text. Submitting a word you just typed using Rockwell doesn't cut it! As much as I love Rockwell (for example), you didn't make it. Show off what YOU can do.

Legibility is important. Don't go too crazy. You can go pretty crazy, but at the end of the day, viewers should be able to read through as they watch it.

I'm on CS4.

You can upload parts using the dumping grounds, or post them to a service like savefile.ro if you're out of space. Just post the link in the thread and I'll download it.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE MAY ASK:

Should it be animated?
Yeah, it should be. It doesn't need to be fancy. Do an simple animate in, or an animate out, or both. Or it could just pop on screen and be a loop, like, for example, three frames redrawn each time for that Another Dayfeel.

Don't worry about the timing of the animate ins or animate outs. Just do them, and then if need be I can sync them up later.

Can I do more than one word?
Yes. Most likely. There are 125 words in the song, and I doubt there will be 125 people interested. So yeah, probably :)

How will co-authors be determined?
Co-authors will be chosen on the basis of involvement, and quality. I can't make any promises, but with Cardboard City, the people who made great parts, weren't late, and were generally cool people about giving suggestions and critiques, they were the ones who got the nine spots. That said, this one will probably be more competitive since there are way more spots than Cardboard City.

Are we doing ads or anything?
We'll put the NG ad preloader on it and split whatever comes from that. This is about the community, not profiting.

Is graffiti lettering aiiight?
DEFINITELY YES
...as long as it's legible :3

Well, who decides what's legible?
Anyone can express that something is illegible in the thread, just don't be mean about it.

Do I have what it takes?
This should be attractive. If you can make something attractive, sweet. If you're having trouble, post works in progress to the thread and we'll all go from there.

DEADLINE: END OF AUGUST.
I want to finish this before school starts again. Before highschool, I had all sorts of time to do fun stuff. Now there's homework, working, etc. It always makes me laugh how I did like, 22 flash things in 2008 and then 6 in 2009. OH WELL. :)

I'll put out a part list with all the lyrics once people have claimed some words, but for now you can refer to the lyrics HERE.

That is everything I can think of at the moment. Details may change as this evolves, but I think that's it for now.

-what about the " thes" and the "ands" and the " buts" those kind of words...do people take those?

-how long will the parts be...almost like 1 second only right??

Feeling UBER dumb! HAHAHAH! There was no FUN! My ears must have a cold. Can I change it to thrill?

Now that I edited my rough draft because, I was having a "Pulling a Dick" moment, HERE is my rough draft. I was able to start because I am bored and nothing else to do.

RedHarvest: Yes! I'm curious about how all the small words will play out too, but yeah, they count as words. People can take them. And yes, these are short parts. What I might do to combat that is have an entire sentence on screen, so for example:

searching for the thrill of it

searching - 'searching' comes up
for -'searching' stays up, for comes up
the - 'searching for' stays up, the comes up
thrill - 'searching for the' stays up, thrill comes up
of/it - same deal :P

that would be one way for them to stay on screen longer.

but yes, to answer your question, prepare one word to be one second.

hey morrow - mind just picking a word / phrase of words for me???? haha ty i cant decide!

I'd like to take the ending words "dream," "explain," "myself," and "again" from the first verse, having them take a little bit of time to form due to the vocal silence after each line if you think that'd be cool.

I'll also take both "falling"s and the last word, "light" if you'd feel like giving me the go :D

So we just animate the word and leave it with just a white background?

Basically, Yeah! But, It's a black background. Handrawn word too.

Here's an example for anyone having trouble with the concept

Cloud Eater: Yes. No background, just the type. The final will be over black though, not white.

NEW RULE: Just to keep things simple and organized, sign up and complete one word at a time. That way no one gets in over their heads, doesnt complete stuff, etc. It'll also just help me keep track of everything. It's also a way to vet quality.
