Its a waste to look for this needle, because the needle may have already moved. Signifying the fact that this life we are looking for could either be dead, or in a totally different spot by time we send someone to go find it.
If we do find this needle, it probably will just find a way to hurt us too. Who's to say this needle isn't a bit rusty and going to take us as inferior.
Life within the heavens is a nuisance and we as a civilization should be afraid to find it.
Well, depends on how common life is. Life could be a one in a trillion thing, or there could be life nearly everywhere (mars, europa.) There are three possibilites for life in our own metaphorical backyard. Who is to say that life isn't extremely robust and will spring up nearly everywhere.
For all we know we could be sorrounded by civilizations looking up at their own skies(if they have eys). They might not even be carbon based, sulfur based life is a possiblity, and I have always been curious on the procpects of silicon based life.
While I agree with you that we probably won't find life for a while, but I say within four thousand years of the space age's start I think we will come into contact with atleast one other species.

Let's say the proverbial needle in the proverbial haystack could be the answer to all the world's problems. And there's also a chance that the needle isn't there anymore.
People would still search for it. even in a barnyard full of hay, do you know what I'm getting at?

If the reason why you think its dumb is because of the odds then you have more to think about.
First off one of the reasons we want to find aliens is because we are lonely as a species. Yea we have each other, but we want to meet a completely different species that we can truly interact with on a different level then we are able to now.
Not only that but if you notice people as a whole are always reaching outwards, always expanding. Trying to find and explore the possiblity of alien life is just another way of doing so.
I think we shouldn't for our own well being.
I believe someone told me Ethan Hawke went on a rant that aliens might try to manipulate us and then use us for Earth's natural resources, which I completely agree with. Not only that but think of the difficuluties. If we had a Earth where ET was walking around the results could be catosphoric. Think about it, people would try and rape/murder/hurt/abuse ET, as well as vice versa which would cause a massive conflict.
Also lets be honest, people aren't the nicest of species will kill everything thats out there that we have the ability to kill, I have a feeling we would(or atleast one person) would sever ties between the ET before we even got a good realtionship going.
Ever seen District 9? That is exactly how it would be if aliens came here, or it would be the other way around. (No, I'm not talking about the guy mutating into one of them, I mean we would treat them like shit)
But if you think about it mathematically, it's impossible that there isn't life out there.
That one fact apparently drives so many scientists crazy enough that they're willing to spend those countless generations searching for life, even if it is never found. After all, science is all about curiosity.
