I can't agree that this is necessarily true. Value is in the eye of the beholder. I wouldn't even play WoW if it was free to play. So I'm not here to talk about the game, just about the concepts and ideas of "paying for a game every month." If SSBB, perhaps, were to have a huge open-world online multiplayer mode, giving out new characters and stages and items online all the time (and they somehow continued to be good), I would probably be paying money for it right now, two years later.

The thing I DO know about MMO games like WoW is that online multiplayer is front-and-center the biggest part of the experience (I mean, obviously). And it's not like it doesn't cost the company a lot of money to keep it up and running. So you really are getting something for the continued payments. I know all online games need to be maintained, but MMO's more than anything.

Hmm addiction, I feel is another often used argument against WoW. I do have an account, obviously, but I haven't played it for more than 10 hours this and last month.
The BBS on NG is currently a bigger addiction to me.

I've never been willing to pay monthly to play WoW. I played it every once in a while at friends houses but that's it. I'm just going to wait for Diablo 3 to come out.

Sure, there is some better buy-once-never-pay-ever-again games out there, but WoW is just simply fucking huge, and it will definetly keep me entertained for months.

I have played WoW. Here is where my opinion differs from yours...
(keep in mind, everyone else, that this is not directed to you, or the previous talk about paying monthly, so please save me the tears)
When you play competitive online games, SKILL should be the number one factor, not hours spent playing/xp earned.
Any game where you gain an unfair advantage against a brand new player is in my opinion imbalanced.
In a FPS, you have a gun, I have a gun, we fight based on our skill.
In WoW you have a lvl 80 and I have a level 10, we can't even battle fairly.
Graphics would definitely be a plus.... why rob yourself of the luxury?
I mean I can understand why you could look passed the poor visual quality, because you find other good qualities about the game.... but wouldn't it be nice??

Subscription games require updating, bug fixing, server maintenance and rental and administration positions to keep you having a good time with an experience that is fulfilling and new each time you play, so you will continue to play. Games cannot expand or be updated or have new worlds and such added without employing someone to do that work.

The picture, though related, wasn't really necessary. Is it ridiculous to pay that much? Yes. Most game subscription fees are. You've already payed for everything, so why a monthly fee? Because.

People don't care about how much money they're raking in at the moment. They only care about how much money they COULD rake in in the future. Game devs will always find ways to make people pay more than what they should.

Look at CoD: Black Ops. It MIGHT have a subscription fee. But people who have played the CoD games since the beginning will still want to (or have their parents) pay for it because they're so hooked on it. It's like taking drugs for some people. I wouldn't pay a subscription fee for ANY game. I rarely buy any add-on content mainly because that should already come with the game.

Hey guys, see, theres this game called World of Warcraft and since I don't like it, everyone who plays it is a faggot and my opinion is the only one that matters.

I don't understand it either, man. It's not like there's any plot to it, either. It's not like Zelda or Mario or Sonic where there's a goal at the end and you finish the game by defeating the final boss, it's like you play endlessly non-stop killing all sorts of things and battling other people countless times. Doesn't it get monotonous after a while?

My brother's a WoW addict. He spends 8+ hours a day on that god damn game.

Former WoW player here, and while I would totally like to take the side of the Anti-WoW brigade, unfortunately the points people are making do not relate to my reasons for hating the game and why I quit it.

Instead, I would like to point out certain flaws and falsehoods people are spreading around about WoW that are just crap.

Hmm, how could Blizzard have ever made such an oversight on its graphics, I mean, they should grab the Crysis engine and go with it... Oh shit now that only top end computers can play WoW almost 80% of their customers forfeited their subscriptions because their low to mid-grade computers cannot handle it! You think that Blizzard who is in games like Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 ignores graphics? Besides that point, blizzard does put all their effort into making the most of what they can do, the latest expansion in WoW was far more detailed and ran much more smoothly than the original WoW.

Thats odd, I did not recall my experience leveling up being a grindfest at all. Its funny how much freedom I had to do what I wanted in the game, from running dungeons to picking flowers (slight grind, but hey it was a good waste of time) to well, dueling outside of Orgrimmar (Yea I was Horde, bite me), I could go on. And once every say 5-6 levels a new area would open to me, and I would welcome it. Of course, everyone has their own paces, some people are probably slower than me, but probably monopolize the auction house (I could make an entire discussion about the auction house but that is another time), or the "ones without a life" who get to 80 in 7 days, jesus!

Anyhow, if you are the kind of gamer who wants everything open to you immediately, who does not have patience to pay the 1st or 2nd month fee before reaching the full content after your "grind", then the game probably was not meant for you, ergo don't bash it.

Not gonna argue with you on that point, even in the Arena part of the game (2v2, 3v3, 5v5 PvP), certain compositions of classes definitely dominate the brackets, but only the most skilled get to the top. If I had to compare to a FPS, I would definitely say Modern Warfare 2 hits the mark. Gotta love those stacking killstreaks, man getting 5 kills in a row nets you 20+ with the copter, homing rocket, and gunner copter, man that was hard. And don't get me started on the SMGs.

Anyhow, there are far too many examples of unbalanced PvP in games out there, why should WoW be the only one to take a huge dive for them? Grow up, see the light.

It is a ripoff, I would make the argument about how they have to maintain the servers, and all the payments like that, but (I cant remember where) someone did the math, and there is an amazing surplus of income for Blizzard from WoW, they could probably reduce the monthly fee but as long as people play it aint gonna happen. From a personal standpoint 15 bucks a month is not a huge deal, there are greater bills out there to be paid, and WoW provides its services well enough to make the money worthwhile.

I forget all the other arguments, mainly because some may be a bit off or not worth arguing back because of the sheer stupidity of the argument. Regardless I would like to add a few things.

- WoW was by no means bad, sure its a commitment, but how long would you play FPSs, RPGs, or Sports games for? 2, 4, maybe 5 hours a day here and there? I know when I got into the game for raiding I slowed my playing down to 12 hours a week, just 12, none of that "MY SON IS ALWAYS ON WoW HE NEVER GOES OUTSIDE" crap. I doubt the game was addicting for me, but it wasn't a waste of time that's for sure.

- I had fun with it, and that folks is ALL that should matter, if the video game was fun. When it stopped being fun, I quit, simple as that.

That's why you should stick to deadmatch FPS games where you enter a game for 1 hour and you randomly shoot people for most kills. RPGs are about levelling. This has it's benefits and disadvantages.
One can sum them up as stating you don't need skill to level up.
Now I know that if I were to play any FPS, I would probably hate it. There would be all those people who are experienced in such a way that as soon as I pop my head out they pull a headshot and I won't stay alive for more then 20 seconds. I wouldn't like such games because I just wouldn't have any chance at all to build the experience needed.

Returning to PvP in WoW, I have not a lot of experience with PvP, I don't play the game for PvP. I do know that when it comes to levelling, that matters a lot. So when doing PvP, you might want to take challenges of people about the same level. One on One combat will be pretty straight forward and can be a battle for strategic use of skills, but won't be as enjoyable. I do figure that when groups challenge eachother, it might be fun, cause then co operation is important.
Then again, I wouldn't play Warcraft in order to get some PvP. Just to enjoy the scenery and the quests.
