I just got Steam finally so I could try Alien Swarm. I'm wondering if there are any fun Steam games that can run on my crappy computer. All I know about my PC is that it has 1GB of RAM and is running Windows 7. So... any possible suggestions?

Well, that new NASA Moon Base game is free, and doesn't look too graphically demanding...
Also, the original Half-Life and all of its expansions should work fine on your computer, even with the Hi-Res pack enabled.

Indeed that game is your friend.
Another very fun game is Project: Gordon. Half life sidescroller and it's totally for free on steam.
Team Fortress 2 is also a very fun game but on a crappy computer, I would recommend upgrading and updating all drivers and just doing what you can. Then, switch to a Direct X8. There are many internet tutorials and it only takes around a minute.
I know myself for I have a crappy computer. The first time i played TF2 on Direct X9, it was horrible. Then I switched to Direct X8 and it improved framerate by at least 60.

By the way, could you post your full specs here?1GB of RAM doesn't tell us much..and christ, if you have W7 you can simply type "system info" on the Search, open System Information and see it..
