You do realize that he didn't die from the gunshot, but rather the infection from the "doctors" shoving their unwashed hands into him to try to fish out the bullet.

He was hit near the base of the skull, and survived 2 days (give or take) before dieing. He would have been severely paralyzed, but alive.
