It's slightly better than sitting on your ass all day and getting either flabby or just plain fat.
Anyhow OP, swimming's the best thing you can do. Burns up plenty of calories, builds up muscle, makes you fitter.

I'd whole heartedly recommend distance running. If you run say 10K then you'll burn around 500Kcal. It's a prefect way to both lose weight and improve fitness.
I love running and since I started about a year ago, I go everyday. Once you get into it you'll find it immensely rewarding as you try and improve your personal bests and further your distances. It really is a great, pure way to exercise. If you go outside, out in the country then theres also the added benefit of all the lovely scenery. If you have any interest in running though, make sure you get fitted with running shoes tailored for your foot size and your gait; otherwise you could do some serious damage to your body. If you start running and find yourself enjoying it, i'd recommend you look into this, the nike+ equipment and community.
