Everytime i try to make an animation... i skipp them as if i have a phobia of them. i remember using them in animation class i thought they helped you organize what happens in an animation but i forgot how.
A movieclip is a symbol. There are three kind of symbols: Graphics, Buttons and Movieclips.

Movieclip is a whole new timeline in a symbol, you can have sounds and do anything you want with it
Graphics can only retain video (non sound) however you have more control over how they play, whether its loop, single frame, or play once
Scenes are helpful :P But its up to you how you use them really

Graphics are also cool because the frames inside show up on the timeline.
