i try to point it out to him that he drinks too much but he acts as if he can control himself but i know he cant... sometimes at the dinner table he looks completely hammered.

Tell him how you feel, tell him that if not for his own health, he should stop for you, tell him how he thinks you will feel when you (graduate) (marry) without your dad there. Tell him that he will never see grandchildren. Tell him everything he will miss out if he carries on drinking self destructively.
If he denies that he does drink a lot, then it's probably his pride in the way. Phone up the NHS helpline and see if you can get some brochures to help him out, and quietly just hand them to him, without hurting his pride.
If he's always been an alcoholic, then you shouldn't be upset if he dies.
