I remember posting this before, but I've always imagined the BBS as an apartment.
When you make a topic, you're renting out a room in the apartment. People can come into your room and shout things at each other. Some people shout one thing and leave, others shout for a while and then leave. Moderators can come and literally lock the room, and clear all the people out of it, but on the door there would be some sort of list of what people had said, that nobody can write on.
On the other hand, Mods could clear everybody out of the room and put the room back up for renting, thus "deleting" the old room.
There would be different floors for the different forums, which you would only be able to get to from an elevator. The Mod Forum would be like the penthouse level or whatever.

That's all I got.
