There is a reason that rotten tomatoes gave it 6/100. That is, they were being generous. Aside from the occasional amounts of pretty the movie was horribly bad.

First, the writing. Horrible. I've seen second graders write better than this. The first 10 lines of the movie are essentially, "but I followed the seals how could they lead me astray HANDS OF MANOS!" which promptly leads into auhngh (Yeah they can't say Aeyng) saying "I ran away under the ocean, but now I'm going home. I was upset." Katara: "But you're not upset anymore. Ang: "No, not anymore." The dialogue feels like shamasuck talked to his 4 year old and let him put down the words, but if you were hoping that ignoring everyword out of every character's mouth would somehow make the movie better and that you could subsist off of references to the original show, you're still wrong.

Every single character's name excepting Zuko and Katara has been changed. (Iro --> Eero, Ayng -> Ahng, Saka -> Suko, Avatar --> Ahvahtahr). They decided to replace Avatar Roku with the dragon from DBZ, as well. "Eero" isn't a fat jolly tea drinker, he's a thin greasy Italian. Zuko is a ball of shitty teen angst, which you think would be true to form, but it isn't. Princess Uwe is the only character they nailed in casting, even though they turned her into a powerless queen with dead parents.

Bending isn't bending it all. You expect whatever element to follow the character, but instead it looks like a Mighty Morphing Powerranger display. They do a bunch of quick stupid moves and then the element does exactly what's needed even though it looks nothing like what the movements implied it should.

This movie was a total and complete failure. Do not pay money to see it. I want to kick the director in the face and use his body to sled down a rock strewn slope. On the way down I'll be lighting bags of kittens on fire.

Seeing how I never watched the show I probably would be kinder in the judging. Especially since I'd be rating it on special effects.

I was trying to escape from the movie into anything the show had and couldn't find it. You would probably enjoy this less than I did. And you would come out angry and incite genocide. For the love of humanity, preserve yourself.

Probably best to just pretend it doesn't. There's no way you can condense 3 seasons of storyline into one movie without butchering the plot. The name/character change also seems extremely unnecessary to me.

Plot, characters, storyline, core theology, theme, and style are all failures. The good news is, they only ruined the first season. The bad news: this director wants to turn it into a trilogy.

If you want quality, watch the animated series. It's so much more rewarding and I'm suprised any director could fuck up this bad. Nothing could have prepared me for this.

I thought uncle Iro was the only one that was spot on even if he didn't look it, he was the best one, i cringed every time Katara came on the screen, OP is right: the first 10 minutes are the WORSE THING I HAVE EVER SEEN it was so rushed, they see him unconsious, cut to next scene, he is all better and talking like nothing happened, and the following did not make the movie: the whole Jet thing (kinda important), Aang's old earthbending friend, the Kabuki warriors (kinda important since they taught sokka how to fight)the ship episode with the earthbenders and the coal, replaced with them being on regular land using the ground below them... like they couldnt't do that before when there are ten times as many earth guys... Zhao and Zuko never even make contact till the end, which doesnt really show Zhao's cowardice, Ssokka and Katara's father is never even mentioned, Katara never learns she can heal, and Zhao has a silllier death, randomly drowned in a ball of water

TL;DR It was not good: Needs a new director, producer, and writer, who can pronounce the names right

Thanks gumOnShoe, I won't be wasting ten dollars on a shitty movie now. The movie trailers make it look epic, but if the writing is really that bad (and I've heard this from a good number of sources) then it won't be worth the money. Pity really, I haven't really followed it but I do like the animated version.
