The only thing that physical punishment will instill in children is immediate obedience. It teaches them nothing about morality, only that they'll get hit if they do something while mommy's around. There are far more effective ways of instilling discipline then spanking, ways that touch the child on an emotional level instead of just a simple sensory level.

In other words, spanking is no substitute for actual parenting.

I believe that it is a parents own responsibility to punish their children. And if they decide they want to beat them as a form of punishment than so be it. I think that most parents would not chose that method of treatment to keep their kids in line.

Most importantly if your going to spank or w/e, you have to be an actual good loving parent, otherwise they will be affected in a whole crap load of different ways. Getting my ass beat for 90% of my child hood. I have to say the OP needs to shut the fuck up and know what he's talking about.
1. Getting grounded is far worse, once the beating is done, it's done you go back to doing whatever the fuck you want. But being grounded takes away your rights to do anything fun so it sucks ass.
2. Getting spanked only works temporarily when you're really young you become too afraid, once you get older you can take more hits and you end up getting enough balls to fight back.
3. Spanking makes things worse. You grow up very angrily you have all this hate and madness from the ass whoopings through out your life that when you grow up you do shit just to piss off your parents. You become a lot more durable hence you'll do more dangerous shit because hey you been getting your ass beat your whole life, a lot less scares you and a lot more hurts you less. You also take out that anger on other people, you bring that attitude from home everywhere you go so you're bound to be an asshole in school and if you have a job...well your job (though you shouldn't be getting beat at that age)
Don't beat your kids if you don't want them to grow up into crazy rebels. Raising a kid with pain and fear is not the way to go, eventually he'll be immune to it, and then he'll be causing pain...and fear. It's a terrible influence and just fucked up.

My mom stopped spanking me when I was 3, and instead got into my head about doing bad things. I can honestly say I haven't been in bad trouble for doing anything terrible. For the most part I stay out of trouble. I plan on teaching my kids the same way if I ever have any. Spanking only works for SOME things, if they do something really bad I WILL spank them, but most of the time, I'll discipline them another way.

Did it work? I would like to think so. Most of my guy friends got belted too to instill discipline on them and we're all doing much better than the ones that didn't get disciplined through physical punishment. It's not conclusive though since good parenting played a huge part of it.

I don't really think it's abuse even though there's a fine line.

Bullshit. I don't go around bullying people or picking fights.

Grounding did nothing for me. If I got grounded from using a computer with a password, I'd just bypass it. If they hired a guy to disable the Power button from the TV and hid the controller, I'd just borrow a friend's or buy one. If I got grounded for going out, I'd sneak out. Getting grounded taught me how to lie and deceive my parents.

You can make a counter-argument for any kind of parenting method, but fact of the matter is, spanking will work if done correctly and at the right time assuming you have the balls to do it. The real problem is when parents act violently, that's completely different. Beating the shit of your kids is not spanking.

I won't spank my kids though because I couldn't for the life of me hit them. I'll come up with other methods myself.
