Glad to help, I know alot of people love retro games, but I've found a way to simulate them without paying any money on games, controllers, or consoles. And best of all, it's doable in 3 easy steps.
Step 1: Go to youtube
Step 2: Put on Super Mario Bros 1 music
Step 3: Bash your head against the desk.
Congratulations, you're now playing super mario bros 1. Enjoy.
"Sir, we are surrounded!"
"Excellent, we can attack in any direction!"
Define "retro." By the definition you gave, with Megaman being on NES and Sonic on Genesis, there's still way too many to name. I'd recommend Google-ing some NES and Genesis games to try out.

Wow, you are like, so funny and sharp.
Grab a Super Nintendo. Then, get Final Fantasy III. It was Final Fantasy VI in Japan, if you're confused. Square used to do that a lot, but the real Final Fantasy III didn't come to the West until a DS remake was released. Final Fantasy VI is awesome. Also, Secret of Mana, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past... Really, the SNES years were great for epic adventures. If you're not much of an RPG fan, get Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Super Metroid.
Actually, don't take my word for anything. Pick a retro system and a preferred genre, and this is a list as compiled by 4chan's /v/. Be aware that, as it's 4chan-based, there are sure to be troll suggestions, but some of them are really good.

Me? no way, you're the real deal. I'm no match for your sarcasm.

Can you be more specific as what system or what games you're looking for? Either way, a SNES is probably the perfect system as well as the Genesis and NES.

Yes, both are very good for an up and coming masochist. Enjoy cutting yourself, because that's the only thing less fun than playing retro games.

Dude piss off, if you don't like retro games just leave no need to insult the guy or other people's posts. The guy wants to play retro games so people are just giving him some suggestions, sorry he doesn't want to look for modern day games to play which you'd probably prefer. Stop being a fuckin' immature bitch.
Couldn't you be more specific, what consoles you have etc.? Or are you being a douche and using emulators?

Whoa, thanks guys. And yeah I might be a douche and use an emulator. Although I'm probably just gonna save up money and buy a SNES. I'm really looking for any retro game and I'm not looking for any system. I've never really played much retro games so anything goes. Thanks guys.

You're only hurting your own experience. I've used emulators, and let me tell you, it ain't as good as the real thing. A physical copy, the actual hardware, these things improve the experience. Games are more fun when you're sprawled out on the couch than they are when you're sitting at the computer.
Hey, Neo-Geo games are also kinda retro.
Early 90's games like Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting and Metal Slug are awesome, but since the Neo-Geo was very powerful for its time, they don't look very "retro".
There are only like a hundred games for that system, if you like arcade games, you should try it out.

I'm just wondering, but a Super Nintendo doesn't cost much right? I think I have a couple somewhere, its just that they don't work.

Unfortunately SNES now cost like $40 - $50 if you want them in good condition. On the better note, if you go to a flea market, pawn shop, or even a yard sale, you can get them for poor to great condition and usually for a good price. I got my SNES for $30 with a controller and 3 games at a flea market, so you just have to look around.
However, your main concern should being able to afford games, because many games which are highlights of the SNES (e.g. Chrono Trigger, FF VI, Super Metroid etc.) are easily $20 and up.

I take it you've never played an FPS or any Xbox 360 game.
You're best bet is to pick up a cheap PS2 and play any one of these retro compilations
There's a ton more, and you can also play cool PS1 games with your PS2. This is the best advice that I can offer.

Well For The First You Should Get An Emulator.
A emulator can play other games and more for free.
Get a Nes Emulator at. Www.Emulatorzone.Com
THen Find something about Nes.
Then Search The Game U Want on google.
Example: Nes Megaman 1 Rom.
Also make sure that you need to download stuff.
It Shouldn't be any Spyware/Virus And That Stuff.
Also the Megaman games was my Favourite Games When I Was: 8-11 Years Old.
Well I hoped you readed this. Go Doperoms for Nintendo 64 Games For Free.
See Ya Later.
PS: You can connect your Xbox 360 Controller to your computer to play. Pretty Cool Eh? :P
