If you actually won something other than an arbitrary title, then it might matter on some small level. It's not a big deal or anything, it's just a chance for those who have actually contributed to the community to gain some recognition.

Of course well know users get nominated because if they weren't well known, then no one would know about them. Newbies aren't recognizable names because they haven't been seen around enough for people to remember them and have an opinion of them.
