I would like to here what other people think about this subject. I am not a gun fanatic nor a hater. I don't believe in banning guns, and I think that the laws already made for guns (aprox 3,715 laws) should be put to use.

I'd love to see the laws put to use. There are some problems though:

1. Misinterpretation of the 2nd ammendment- It says a "well-regulated militia" can have arms. However, too many people (NRA, many Americans in general) interpret this as they get the right to have guns.

2. "Safety"- Many people think that if they have a gun, they'll cut down on the "epidemic" of break-ins in America. Last I checked, there wasn't an epidemic of break-ins. It's just Middle America fear of minorities, which I'll get into in a minute. The guns more often get involved in homicides involving kids playing with them, accidentally blowing the brains out of a family member coming home late, or Columbine.

3. Middle America's fear of minorities- Come on, we know this exists. They fear that blacks and Latinos will break into their houses and kill them. There are some (I'm not saying there are any on NG, but there probably are) In particular, check the Bible Belt.

4. American fear of over-government- They don't want to be repressed, and the taking away of guns and the right to buy guns is seen as the next step to autocratic rule. So, they join militias and want to take the government over.

5. Middle and Southern America's fear of liberals- Liberals (Clinton) are going to take their gun rights away. Therefore, liberals are evil.

That's what I've seen, anyways. I don't think that the laws can be strengthened, and they won't be in the "Compassionate Conservative" presidency of George W. Bush. Just wait until some Vietnam vet (McCain or Kerry) beats him in 2004, even if the election is close.

That very statement could be what makes those who oppose you win this debate.
