Why do australians say mate all the time. Like whenever they talk to someone they have to say mate at least every five words. The same goes for brits. What the hell guys?

How should I know, I live in Lithuania. We were in the soviet union til the 90s for Pete's sake...Anyways I don't know how to explain this in english but I'll try. Brits use "mate" as more of an expressional word, not an actual word. Something like "eh". But americans use it as an actual one.

Maybe occasionally, but I don't hear it all the god damn time like I do Austrailians. That, or I'm watching the steryotypical ones all the time.

we canadians use the word 'Eh a lot but not after every sentence. also i use mate with my friends whe we're hanging out.

No we don't. Mate is a slang word for "friend", in exactly the same way "buddy" is.

That aside, despite living in England I don't actually hear the word "mate" get through around that much. I find myself spurt the word out occasionally though, once every blue moon.

I'm English, you don't need to explain this to me.

I just assumed most nations had some form of word they use when talking to someone they don't know well enough to call a friend, but someone with which they are having a nice if somewhat casual conversation with.

I've used the word 'mate' many a time in my life and no doubt will keep doing do.

I live in England, and I rarely ever hear someone say mate. It may just be where I live, but it's very rare.

Lol im all too guilty of this i happen to call random people who start on me or have an argument with me mate i just use the word alot and ive been too many different parts of the country and its all the same i have no idea why..

That's good. Here instead of "mate" we use something else. It sounds weird and creepy in english, and translates to "oldman". We mostly call people we know like this or people who are older than 12 but younger than 30.

It's just a word we commonly use to address people, like 'buddy' or 'friend' or 'bro' or 'man'.

When I address someone I usually say hey or yo, I hardly use names idk why I've been yelled at by old people saying its disrespectful.
