Everything is different. That's kind of the point though, where exactly do you draw the line and say "OK this does NOT need to be another genre/subgenre/subsubgenre"? The more you expand the amount of genres/subgenres out there, the more confusion it creates.
Such is the wonder of subjectivity, everyone sees it differently.
Why bitch because you can't slow it down to match your pace? Most of the genres/subgenres out there just seem to be completely redundant. It seems like the only purpose most of these genres/subgenres fulfill is to make some music snob feel like he's accomplished something when he points out that "You shouldn't refer to blah as metal, because blah, blah, and blah. Therefore it actually belongs under the blah genre".
It just seems to only further complicate things.
I find that the cropping up of excessive genres, and they ARE often excessive, comes more from individual artists trying to create an identity aside from all the others. The perpetuation of it by "music snobs" may well contribute to this, but I think the core issue is, again, that people usually just dont care about the genre and want to hear the MUSIC, and since it's all different the genre is at best a guide.
So in a way I agree with you, but I've learned long ago that no matter how right you are, the tides of humanity WILL mow you down if you try to stand right in front of them. There's no point trying to change it, just understand it and how you can best act in regards to it.

Sure it can be overdone, and oftentimes the uninitiated will invoke a lot of name-dropping (genre dropping?) to obfuscate their lack of knowledge - point is, genres and subgenres are a good way of describing general (classical, blues, metal, etc.) and specific (hair metal, death metal, etc.) trends in music.
I understand that and I don't have a problem with all genres/subgenres out there. The thing is, you only need to narrow it down so much, after that it's just redundant. The many redundant genres/subgenres out there are what I'm addressing.
might as well say a lot of subsubgenres begin with adjectives, like melodic death metal. Or the death metal is melodic. Like the band mirrorthrone, vlad incorporates melodic progessive death black folk touches into his music, but do i call his music all that? no, i call it avante garde.
Now if you ever see someone naming a genre like RB did, then that person is an idiot and you should punch them in the face for me.

Which is derivative of bashing sticks together and yodeling
I redact my previous statement.
There is only one genre.
And that is yodeling.
I think a genre needs to classified by people whp are unfamiliar with the particular style of music. For me personally, I listen to jazz a lot, so I would probably group it into several subgenres, maybe even create a whole new genre. People don't listen to jazz will probably call it all "jazz" as they can distinguish other genres from it, but they cannot hear much of a difference in the style of two separate jazz songs. This perfectly fine to me. All metal sounds the same to me.
Sub-genres are pretty ridiculous. People feel that they are justified in using them just because they feel that their particular sound isn't quite covered by an existing genre, so they have the ego to claim that they've broken into an entirely new genre simply because they don't fit into the cookie cutter perfectly.

I think entirely the opposite. There should be maybe four kinds of rock: Emo, hard rock, metal and death metal.
Electronic music however can be divided into many different feels.
Techno is all about the beats.
Trance is all pads.
House I'm not sure about.
Drum 'n Bass is exactly what it says on the tin: Kickin' beats and hardcore base with the occasional lead here and there.
