Windows ME... 2010-06-12 23:15:19 Reply

So, my neighbors gave me a free computer thinking it was broke, but the harddrive was just blown. I replaced it with one of my old harddrives with Windows ME on it. Windows ME isnt compatible with USB storage devices nor alot of modern files we use. Im trying to install Windows7 onto the computer. The floppy disk drive is broken. How do I completely wipe out the old ME OS so It is availabe to download 7?

This is the only time that asking a person to delete system32 would be acceptable, I think.

You do want your hard drive cleared, right?

Format the hard drive. Destroys shit dead. Now the computer probably won't allow you to format the drive, so you should try downloading Ubuntu, and using the LiveCD and formatting from there.

personally i would talk to a person in a lower end computer store, or repair shop... all they have is the knowledge to get them by, and thus they have a lot of it..
i bet you 25 cents that they could tell you everything and even sell you a new floppy drive and other things to pimp out your new to you comp

Windows ME... I automatically think of my home-state. and how fitting that it would share it's abbreviation with that backwards computer.

Windows ME has been discontinued (and disowned) since 2006.

You should move on to something more current like Windows (XP, Vista, 7), Linux, BSD, or some other shit.

But you should avoid Windows 2000 since it will be disowned this July.

If by disk you mean floppy, then you should pop in your Windows 7 CD and do the custom install so that it wipes ME and installs 7 fresh.

You need to use BIOS setup, and repartition your hard drive. AKA completely wipe and reformat your drive. If you don't know what you're doing, I strongly suggest you get someone else to walk you through it while you do it.

You have to make the DVD drive bootable through the BIOS/CMOS first. If you don't have a DVD drive, then you can't install 7 or Vista - Unless you're living in a developing country where it comes on regular CDs.

That's because that's 9 years worth of technology that doesn't exist yet according to the computer.

As for USB, there is no excuse. That was made in 1996.

my point exactly. and for some reason it cant read exe files. and I have no ideal how to use BIOS. or what it is.
