i play a Squire vintage P-Bass and am looking to upgrade. without looking at price, what is the better bass: an American Fender Jazz, or a 4003 Rickenbacker? i mostly use my fingers, but also slap and pick. my music is alt and classic rock for the most part
I can't think of anything clever at the moment

Been a guitarist for 4 years. I started out playing lead/shredding guitar and evolved into playing accoustic/electric grunge/punk/thrash. Most of the stuff I come up with is just riffs and open major/minor chords.
I'm starting to get into jazzy little riffs and stuff. I want to try playing a mix of metal, punk, grunge, industrial, with little jazzy embellishments. I need to work more on my soloing, tho. I'm still not quite all that great at soloing.
Any advice on how i can improve my soloing capabilities?

If you're going to be slapping on it; go for the Jazz bass. It's just plain good for slapping and popping. I've never played a Rickenbacker but all I hear is good things from people who play finger style.
If you want versatility, go for the Jazz but that's just me. I'd ask for more opinions on this.

So I decided to take up learning a new song. It's based off an old Poe story " the fall of the house of Usher ". At some point in the story one of the characters ends up sitting alone in his room playing " a mad waltz " on his guitar. Nikita Koshkin composed an actual song in honor of the story.
Yep. It should be significantly harder than asturias seeing as how there are a lot more harmonies in this song.

Argh, I tried not to triple post.
So for pickups I think I'm just going to get some EMG 81/89's.
Other than that I have been considering a new amp. Right now i only havea Crate mx15lr or something like that and I was looking at This line 6 amp.. What do you really think comparing it to this other model? Price is a bit of an issue, but are the few extra features really worth it?
And my multi effects pedal has been cool but I'm actually looking for something to create a more " serious " mood. What do you think?

I don't think that anyone cares what you posses...
I was looking at This line 6 amp..
Be a man and buy a real amp - Marshall or a Masa Boogie.

No.

Work on your music, not your effects if you want to initiate a 'mood' of some sort.

Yeah, because the company is largely made up of ex-Marshall employees. They're good though, but not manly enough.

Well if you're talking manly amps I think of Engl, Diezel, Framus and Baron all before Marshall.
Right now I'm very slowly learning my way through Diminished to B at 50% speed, hopefully I'll get it up to a full playthrough at 70% speed by the end of half term, solo excluded.

It doesn't take a genius to use a visual programming language.

Telecasters are for men over the age of 50 who at least grew up in the 60s or people who wear tight jeans, flannel shirts and carry iPhones at the same time. Just buy an Ibanez and call it a day.

Good point. Save me some money though ;)

So how many of you actually use scales and progression? It's weird for me, I use it when playing on my classical but not when I'm playing my electric. Lately I've been inspired by Decapitated, and of course their guitarist is awesome, but of course he was in musical school or whatever.
So I've been practicing more on my scales. Any tips on how to actually remember full scales? Right now I've been learning an E harmonic minor.

I need to sit down and learn a shitload of scales too. I only know 5 or 6 or so. I need some cool metal ones. I have a huge scale book though. I think you just need to play it a bunch but make it fun. Play it ascending and descending in different keys, try to find songs that use it.

1. Pick a desired scale.
2. Practice going through scale on every string individually.
3. Practice going diagonally.
4. Practice playing the notes on demand with string-skipping.
5. Find patterns for desired scale.
6. Practice going up and down the patterns.
7. Repeat until capable of starting anywhere within those patterns on demand.
The E Harmonic Minor is a personal favorite of mine. It's a easy scale to work with if you take the time to examine it and it becomes very versatile.

Excuse me. I am under the age of 50, wear normal people's jeans, haven't owned a flannel shirt since the 1990s and don't own an iPhone. But I still play a Telecaster and will assert that it is a guitar for a real person, not a guitar playing robot with a black t-shirt with a band no-one other than the robot wearing the t-shirt and about 5 other people (including the people in the band) has ever heard of.

The only one I improvise in is Petatonic/Blues. I can get by with major and minor. My pewter Ibanez is working now! I took it to a music shop and the guy put new strings on it, adjusted the neck and action so it plays awesome now. It stays in tune with whammy bar abuse and sounds great too. A year and a half later, it paid off.

I don't know any modes. I have a huge book of scales, I just need to learn some and figure out what they sound good with.

Haven't posted in a while. In fact for so long, that you probably don't remember me.
So how is it going?
Also, I got a question to you. Lately I kicked my lazy ass to learn theory. So I read about pentatonic major scales. Kind of got the idea.
But still, theory wise, where should I head next? I am confused
Currently struggling to read Fretboard Logic, but it's a bit difficult
