I doubt that I will ever stop using a pick. Have always bit my nails and most likely will continue, I also simply just like using it for the sense of control.

As for technique, Paul Gilbert had spoken in one of his instructional videos about how he use to hold his pick with three fingers in the beginning and than switched after 6 years to two and how the whole transition was difficult but worth it. Just thought I would put it out there.

Guitar lessons with that kid are going great. I get $20 a lesson, and I've taught about 3 or 4 times for over an hour each session. I started by teaching him the basic open chords, some beginner scales, and yesterday I taught him his first two songs, Sunshine of Your Love and Smoke on the Water. All he has to do is practice those and switching chords around as well as memorizing the names of them. It's going much better than that kid last year.

20 bucks? you thief! :P

I suggest you teach him songs with chords rather than riffs, or maybe a mix of both (Back in black, for example) so he can learn how to switch chords quickly

Don't do what my teacher did to me which was just showing and explaining how to play songs. Teach him theory and give him skills that will actually allow him to evolve and become an actual guitarist rather than a late night party juke-box. Not necessarily saying that it doesn't teach the kid anything but that it would be time better spent by showing him the whole picture of how much fun there is to be found in simply knowing the fretboard well. There are tabs for merely any song imaginable out there and with the capabilities of our brains; we can pretty easily figure out rhythms so leave the song teaching for the kid's own personal time. My 2c.

I like that guitar, I was thinking of getting one myself.

My brother started teaching lessons recently. He had four students before. One had to quit because of work, one quit because his parents wanted him to go to a music store for lessons (which charged much more), and one kid hasn't been showing up. It sucks.

I have been playing guitar for five years now and some songs I can play include Stairway to Heaven, Johnny B. Goode, Beat It, and Back in Black...that's just a few, I can play a lot more.

Of course, I've mostly showed him chords and scales, I just wanted to teach him two songs to kind of get a drive to learn more and keep going. Anybody can play songs, it takes real talent to make up your own solos or write your own songs.

I'm gonna work on that next lesson, some easy three, four chord songs like Every Rose Has It's Thorn, Brown Eyed Girl, etc.

Seymour Duncan blackouts, Neck/Bridge combo, should I go for them? They're definately way above the EMGs that came with my guitar.

Ask yourself first if you really need them. They're fantastic pick ups but if it was me, I think I would still lean to the D-Activators from DiMarzio due to them providing the tone of an active pickup but still being passively constructed. Using batteries is great and all but the constant switching and fact that the tone dies as the battery dies; is not something I'm a fan of. Full Shreds from Seymour Duncan are great too. Love the tone.

Should i start learning more theory? I'm "really good" my friends say for only playing for about 8 months, and i really want to be able to write my own songs, not just mimic someone.

Its probably best that you do learn some theory. It can only help your playing, so theres nothing to lose.

I was up last night learning Blackest Eyes and Leprosy. They're both kind of tricky but fun to play.

You don't need to know theory to write songs, it just helps. A lot. Basically the amount of talent you have is inversely proportional to the theory you need to know to write something awesome, if I may oversimplify.

My friend found an EMG pickup sitting on the curb today, it's a little scratched up, but all the wires are all still in-tact. So, I'm gunna sell it for $20

Hey guys...I play guitar as well, and have written a few songs. Some of my influences are Marty Friedman, Mikael Akerfeldt and john petrucci. The link is in my sig. Please check it out and tell me what you think!

That's awesome, I'm more influenced by Jason Becker but Friedman and Becker wrote some crazy stuff together back in the day.

Is it a 200$ Dean or a 5000$ Dean? I would consider them moderately good guitars either way.

Hey, I got a problem... I had a thread idea, I was writing this song okay, then I decided on a break on the work, and to make a thread, where I post my tabs for parts of the song at a time, and hear how other NG users(guitarists) play it back w/o my giving them any info on how I play it, but my problem is, as you may have noticed, every time you try to put a tab anywhere on NG, it comes out all fucked up, like your whole family did, OH DISS, no really, little help?

Take it somewhere else, your thread would probably get locked. If you must, though, you can upload a screen capture of the tab, if it's not too long or post it in another site and link to it.

I'm getting this in about a week or so, along with this little amp.

I need something cheap, but something that still sounds good, so I figured Ibanez was the way to go. I started learning how to play on my friend's Ibanez, and this will be my first electric.

I have a Fender Deluxe Player's strat which had shitty stock pickups that I swapped with SCN samarium cobalt noiseless stratocaster pickups. My favorite band is Weezer. I have been playing guitar for 8 years now.
