Oh, don't worry, is coo.

Right now I'm writing a piece for electric and classical guitar, 2 violins, viola, double bass, clarinet, flute, sax, trumpet, timpani, snare, marimba and xylophone, wish me luck :P

If I was you, I would take out the Viola, Sax, Marimba and Xylophone and then add a Cello instead as you need more texture in the bass. If you're still wanting more instruments add a Bassoon or a Trombone to help support the bass section.
Otherwise, good luck.

I didn't really choose the instruments, I'm writing it for my music theory class at the conservatory, and those are the instruments they play.

So I'm working on my jazz guitar and my instructor doesn't know how to play guitar but he knows what I need to play so I have to pretty much figure out everything on my own. Does anybody know about chord voicings? My director said that they do not include roots and sevenths. Also he taught me a bebop scale which sounds pretty cool and I'm working on it for soloing, as well as switching petatonic scales everytime the chord changes rather than staying in the same key.

Drop me a PM to talk about junk, serious or silly.

Voicings are just different ways of playing the same chord. Same notes, but in different positions on the next and with different roots and stuff.

Right, I need to know about jazz voicings which my director told me does not include the root note, and he says I have to play them pretty high up on the neck.

First, you need to learn what frets are what notes all over the fretboard, then learn a bunch of chords with their different tensions (11ths, 13ths, 9ths, etc), then learn the way they're played on the guitar, and their inversions. Taking the root note out will be pretty easy after that.

Good luck!

Hey I'm new to this thread (And any clubs for that matter), I might just stick around here for a while, anyways, I'm a guitarist myself, I compose music as well, some of my songs are on my user page, I'd be great if I got some decent feed back on them.

I'm currently running on a Fender Acoustic, and I've been playing for about a year and a half, a lot of people have told me I'm really good I just need to learn some theory but whatever. I've been low on money but I've finally started to build it up so this summer I'm plan on getting a decent electric guitar and amp, I was heading towards Ibanez.

Anyways, that's it I guess. Hi everyone!

I have an Epiphone Joe Pass signature, and I got it used, but the bridge is rosewood and it isn't attached to the guitar, its held on by the tension of the strings, wich creates problems when changing the strings. Does anyone know what I can use to attach the bridge without affecting the tone?

Couple of songs uploaded onto newgrounds.

Numb (Acoustic Cover) - This is me without singing, and I hope the people were being honest on the voting and not just voting a "0" because it is Linkin Park. (2.71/5.00)

Brain Damage Cover - I did pretty good on this one to most people, and I song this one. (4.00/5.00)

All of those ratings are true as of June 23, 2009 at 4:07EST

Well, I just learned a couple of chords. I just started today. I think I'm almost as good as Herman Ri.

It's Li and he's a joke. I still can't believe how popular he is while being so terrible and also using studio editing to achieve his unrealistic crazy guitar playing.

So i finally decided to learn a bit of theory and decided to look into learning scales, and seeing as my friend is just starting out, i thought i may as well help him out with learning too.

So if you guys can tell me a good scale to start on for a complete beginner and for someone who's been playing for a year and a half, greatly appreciated.

I've been teaching a kid recently, and the blues or petatonic scale is a great first scale, or you could teach him the major and minor ones.

For me, starting with the songs you like and see if it's playable. As you learn more and more songs (keep it diverse though) your overall skill goes up and you can move to the more complex pieces. And when you've think you have enough under your belt, try composing your own songs.

I'd recommend learning the basic chords first, get your strumming going, learn how to read tablature, scales, (palm) muting and starting with easy songs such as the all-time beginner song "Smoke on the Water", add a little "Smells like teen spirit", "Iron Man", easy stuff like that. Also do various finger exercises. They help tremendously.

One thing I forget to add (sorry for double post):

There are no set rules. There are a lot of people out there saying there's a "right way" of playing the guitar, but that's utter bullshit. Example: "How to hold a pick properly". Tons of people claiming there is a correct way to hold one while actually you should just do what's most comfortable to you. This applies to everything in guitarland, play the way that suits you.

No problem. The Petatonic scale should be taught first, as it is a very easy shape to remember, and the blues scale adds an extra note to the petatonic, so they are very similar and they are both extremely easy to memorize. But don't get me wrong, they sound amazing for just about anything.

There's also the fact that playing with a bad technique can harm you in the long run, so your advice is not always the best. It would truly suck not being able to play after, say 30 years because you held the pick wrong all along :P

But one would expect that after 30 years you would have adapted a personal style that would get you around the shortcomings of your pick holding skills (i.e. not using a pick).
