I don't know a lot about modes, but if you want to learn how to compose/improvise solos over certain chords, I can tell you this:
The cantus firmus are the notes of the chord you're playing, so in a C chord, it's C, E and G. Playing these notes will sound 'good', but you don't want to be playing only those, right? play other notes, but make sure you play the notes of the chord you're on whenever there's an 'accentuation' in the music, like at the start and half of the bar, and when you change chords.
I don't know if I made myself clear, since most of my music knowledge is in spanish, but I hope that helps :D
