& The Ampersand &

So, I was just looking at my keyboard and I realized that there's an ampersand (&) there, so I got to thinking: Why do we have that on there? Is it really necessary?

Just a random thought, but I'd love to hear you guys bitch and moan about it. What do you think of the ampersand?

Other than when I've reached the character limit on a text message, I don't think I've ever used the ampersand.

You see it all the time in titles and business names (Habershmire & Lockner Accounting Firm, Law & Order SVU, etc) - but other than that, I don't see the use of it.

Its a good shortcut in informal writing. Plus, the & is also used as a TF-connector in deductive logic (representing the conjunction, i.e. AND)
