How about have an edit button with a "grace period". Perhaps you can edit your post within 5 minutes of posting it. That would take care of all the situations where someone posts, then instantly recognizes a severe grammatical or logical error in their post. At the same time it would still allow all posts to be solidified and not be subject to unpredictable change.

And maybe it could even go further by being able to delete your post within a minute of posting.

Reasons we don't have edit buttons:

People can post one thing, then go back and alter it when someone calls them out on it. For example, I've seen a lot of threads where people are debating and one user will point out a massive contradiction in what another user has said. An edit button would allow users to hide their mistakes and would render debating pointless.

Also, edit buttons don't encourage users to read through what they're about to post, or to verify their sources and double-check that what they are saying is true. If someone posts something and it turns out they didn't bother getting any real evidence to back it up, the other users point out that user's idiocy and it encourages the user to think twice in future before posting something.

NG is one of the few websites where people who have been posting here for years can look back on their old posts and see a vast improvement in their spelling, grammar, online maturity (oxymoron?) and overall intelligence. I think the lack of an edit button at least plays a part in this, because like I said, it trains users to think about what they're doing.

Also, once you get 10k posts you have access to the Regulars forum and you get the edit button, but we are supposed to use it for minor spell checking and every post is under mod approval, if you try to change the actual content you get a 1 day ban and if you get enough of those you lose the privilege.
