See, personally I don't plan on having kids, so this is a no-brainer for me, I expect both my wife and myself to work.

I'm gonna just say that I grew up in a family where both of my parents worked. And I have no complaints, never turne into a "hoodlum" and the family hasn't suffered.
at one point both parents worked until 9 or 10. then my mom decided she wanted to spend more time with me and came home at six. i fucking hated it

AN eight hour workday can easily be managed considering the kid will spend the majority of that time in school

My dad is gone from Monday to Friday in the city. He then comes home for two days.
My mom works every day from eight to four while my siblings and I are in school. She then comes home for about an hour and leaves to her second job.

My mother worked 5 twelve hour shifts or more per week, and my dad for 8-5, five days a week. They rarely had a week that was actually full time, and had overtime every week. I don't think I suffered.
Except in hugs.

No parenting; kids in childcare; respect never taught; kids turned hoodlums...
I have never a mother who didn't work except for both my grandmothers. In this time and age, mothers have to work... if they want to survive. My mother HAD to work, even days after I was born, cause... well, she and the family has a strong addiction to food, water, shelter, and lights.
Working mothers aren't selfish-- they're trying to keep the family out of the poor house!

My mom stayed home until I was going to school all day. She's a teacher, so she began getting substitute teacher jobs when I was in first grade, then went back to teaching full time when I was in third grade. Dad always worked, but he retired my senior year of high school. That was a major adjustment for the family.
However, there were some points where both parents would work so they'd leave me with a friend who was a stay-at-home mom. If both parents have an arrangement like that I see nothing wrong.
So what do I think? I think one parent should stay home but realize that isn't always possible. So get your kid someone to watch them or good day care.

This thread has entertained me: It seems that NGers who had both their parents work full-time are vehemently supporting the affirmitive of my question, but NGers who didn't have both parents work full-time are vehemently supporting the negative. It tell much about human nature, I suppose.

Then why marry?
Not trolling, I'm actually interested.

The more money you get, the more you can provide for your family. Both parents working means less time struggling with financial problems.

Basically this. As long as the job doesn't rule over child care then you're fine.

Of course they can. Worst thing that happens is the child in unloved 75% of the time. Screw the little fuckers; they ate my fries.

It can work if both parents don't overdue it and someone can be at home. Having two cars really helps with this too.

The kid gets less time with their parents, but more money is made.
It's a simple trade-off.
