I've always wondered why it is that I can easily beat a game with tiered difficulty (Easy, Hard, Recruit, Veteran, etc.) as opposed to games that have one set difficulty level throughout (Final Fantasy, Demons Souls, Mario, etc.).
What do you think? Which games do you have an easier time with. Which ones are more fun?
(imo) Games without diffulcty levels are generally harder because you're kinda thrown in there and have to ajust quick but if it's a game with diffulcty levels, on other playthroughs you generally know what to expect and such and if you die to much you could just lower the diffulcty (unless you fail so much at the easiest diffuclty...)
Almost finished COD4 on the PC on veteran. Almost finished Dragon Age Origins on Nightmare mode.
Also beat ME2 insanity and Oblivion highest difficulty.
When I get bored I try to challenge myself in games. One thing I don't think I'll ever waste time trying to beat is The Mile High Club, I've almost done it so many times but it requires a lot of reflex, skill and luck plus you can't waste any time.

I should post more while high
I think games that have actual difficulty settings tend to be harder (when you play the hardest difficulty) than games with a single one. If there is only one difficulty the game cant be insanely hard otherwise panzies who play it and cant beat it will complain. Therefore they have to make it reasonably difficult. With different levels of difficulty they can make the hardest one completely nuts because as a player that is what you are expecting and in most cases what you want.

Me to Though my reasons are a little different I want to try the hardest difficulty even If I've never played the game on it's normal setting because It's more challenging and when I'm under it I'm not expecting what will happen next. And it also makes the game more longer.
I like games with difficulty levels, since if it gets too hard or too easy I can change it to my liking.
Games like Super Mario Galaxy and Borderlands need a difficulty setting, since some parts are just way too easy.
Games with tiered difficulties have a wider range of difficulties, but the games with 1 difficulty have to have a steeper difficulty curve so that the game starts easy and isn't too easy and uninteresting throughout.
I like the ability to choose between difficulties, because it allows me to increase the challenge if the game is too easy, or decrease it when the game is too hard. For example, on Bioshock, around an hour into the game on Normal, I noticed that you basically trip over ammo and health, so I brought the difficulty up to Hard. The challenge was much better from then on.

I definitely prefer games with a difficulty setting. They usually have more replay value.
The 'Ratchet and Clank style' difficulty setting is good too, though. After you win the game with the first difficulty setting, you can play the game again in Challenge Mode which is much harder but you get to keep all the stats/weapons from the last time you played the game.
I don't usually replay games with no difficulty setting unless there are still more things for me to unlock/more stuff to complete, and even then sometimes I'm reluctant to play it again.

I always play on the middle difficulty, unless I have really good fun with the game, Then I take it for a spin on hard mode.
