Kill them before they kill you
which weapons should I use
Really? Its all up to you. Assault rifles if you want to run around and be a Rambo, Sniper Rifles if you want to camp or hold choke points, etc.
perks
Also up to your individual choice. Perks like Ninja, Ghost, Scout are good for snipers. Etc.
stuff like that
Get Claymore ASAP.

Well, I personally use the MP5K in the lower levels, until you reach level 14, which is when you unlock the first good weapon; The Famas. This is a pretty good assault rifle, very evenly balanced.
When it comes to perks I tend to use Ghost for first perk, which is very useful. Second Perk I usually opt for Sleight of hand, for those fast reloads. And third perk is usually Marathon for me, but alot of people go for Hacker, because you can see claymores, which can save your ass alot.
Try not to camp too much. I've seen alot of baaad campers. Like they will kill you hidden in some corner, then the next time I go back to that spot they'll still be camping in that same corner. I run around alot, and this seems to work well for me. Always keep an eye on your mini map for those red dots and to see where your allies are. This can let you know whether an area is safe or not.
Kill streaks are vital too. If you don't feel confident that you can get high kill streaks like 8+, then stick to lower ones. Spy Plane is very useful. Black bird is even better if you can reach 8 kills. And Blackbird will help you reach an even higher kill streak like Attack Dogs.
Again, this is all my personal preference, and might not suit your playing style. So can't guarantee you anything. Try out alot of weapons and setups to see what suits your style too.

Seeing as we're all giving tips I guess I'll try and help out too.
If you don't want to die as much it's always a good idea to keep checking entrances to any building or area your in unless you have a blackbird obviously. I always find enemies who are hiding in areas sniping or something and get an easy headshot on them because they fail to check the entrances and just rely on their Claymores which don't work as I always have Hacker on (my personal favourite which helps a lot).
When running around maps I always check any corners I go past and check behind me a lot, which seems to help. Make sure your confident that no one is watching an area before you sprint across it as not doing so will usually result in your death.
Perks I go for are pretty much always Hardline, Sleight of Hand and Hacker. Not the best for survival (other than Hacker and occasionally Sleight of Hand). I use Hardline because I'm cheap and usually find that without it I die one kill before a high killstreak reward. For surviving I advise you use Ghost and upgrade it to Pro as soon as possible to be practically invisible to everything but players eyes.
Most of the time I get longer killstreaks is because there is a Spy Plane in the air which tells me where the enemies are, which leads me to the killstreak rewards I would advise.
I'd go for Spy Plane > Blackbird > Chopper Gunner/Attack Dogs/Gunship. If you can utilise Spy Plane enough to get to Blackbird then the rest should follow easily. I personally use Spy Plane > Counter Spy Plane > Napalm Strike/Sentry Gun but that is simply because I play Objective games and like to help out the team like maybe 1/1000 people do.
Guns I'd use are the M16 to start off with, then upgrade through the Assault Rifles up until the FAMAS then the Galil, which are both brilliant weapons. The only guns I used throughout my entire 1st Prestige were Assault Rifles and I did pretty well, coming off with an acceptable 1.30 K/D ratio.
Though I don't advise you do that, as some of the Submachine Guns are great (Spectre, AK74u etc), and depending on your personal preference can get you a lot of kills, especially the 74u, which appears to work with anyone, but is also known as a noob weapon.
Anyway, sorry for the essay, hope it helps to some degree.

Let us know how you do, like give us a few stats every now and then :) Remember to always look behind yourself every now and then, even when you think you could be safe, just peek back for a second. If you turn your sensibility up for your control, you can turn alot faster. Now, not alot of people like this, but I like to have my sensibility on 5 or 6 (I think it's on 2 default). Give it a try and see which speed is best for you.
On a side note, why does no one use great guns like the MPL, Spectre or the Kipalis? They're good little SMGs, and i personally prefer those to the AK47u. I already have over 1000 kills on the MPL - I just love that little thing. It also sounds so unique and quirky :D

I use the MPL sometimes and I always get the Kiparis if I have the points.
I really don't like the MPL at all, but the Kiparis is fantastic.
Also, fun fax: 'Kiparis' means 'Cyprus tree' in Russian.
You are now aware that the classified SMG is, in fact, a tree.

I love it. The only downfall it has maybe is the iron sights are a little wierd. But i've gotten used to them.

Vital information? The Kiparis is pretty cool, the only thing is, it pretty much has to be combined with Scavenger, cos you only start with like 50 bullets. And clips are small, so I usually use large clips on it.

While I have not made any worthwhile videos, I'm sitting on two of Minion777's videos from Team Deathmatch where he was 42-9 and 35-1 in both. We're planning on doing the whole commentary thing on it too, so I guess we'll link to it whenever we finish that.

I really stink at call of duty black ops. I am level 24 or so, and my KD ratio is really bad. I have a .20, whatever that means.
My highest kill-streak is a 4 kill-streak, with hardline perk on.
Also, to agree with someone's post above, I think the pro perks are INSANELY hard to get compared to the ease of getting them in MW2.

Anyone interested in arranging a big game where anyone from NG is invited?
A game with all the people in this thread would be great fun, even if Life-Stream would just kick everyone's asses.
Only problem, obviously, are the time differences.

Someone on my "friends" list copied my emblem. I'll probably delete the little sod. Also, that Eminem song on Five is awesome.

Lol, I don't think he would. If only PC players could play with consoles I would probably put up a great fight against you guys. I'm not amazing or anything, I would just have a supreme advantage. Definitely not bad though.

Nah, my friend had a pretty funny one. It was two rashers of bacon with a pig looking down saying "Dad?". I always found that hilarious.

Hey that idea of making a big NG game with us is awesome! Also, probably, here is some VERY good tips on using shotguns.
My Shotgun class is:
Stakeout Grip: I happen to use this because I think it does more damage then the SPAS, it's a personal preference. The grip helps dearly for hip fire shooting.
Python Snub Nose: This does much damage and is more accurate then the regular Python. Not bad at all.
Perks are
Scavenger: The Stakeout doesn't have much ammo to start out with so this REALLY helps.
Sleight of Hand: 4 bullets in a chamber loaded one by one? Takes for EVER. Just use this and your ass is very much covered.
Then I think there is like Marathon or something as the last one.
My equipment is a sticky nade, because I like them, some Concussion nades because that makes charging a room full of enemies easy kills, I gaurantee it. And some C4, why not? I think I might change this to Claymores though, because if your on the run from a long range weapon, your not gonna be able to outrun it for too long, so I figure dropping a claymore before the guy turns the corner will make me some easy kills.

I would play, but the opposite team would probably win. (I have a .20 k/d ratio overall.)
My best is 9 kills 10 deaths I think. That is a .90 duh.
I love the Famas.
I have Suppressors on all of my guns.
I have the perk Ninja.
I don't remember the other ones.
Lol.

I usually try to join people I see online, but alot of the times I can't join, or when I do join, I get big lg, which makes it near impossible to play. It's always good playing in a big group though.
Added Seriana and Xionico.
