i was thinking of trying comics

yeah I was thinking about it. An attempt at drawing a really bored person at a party..... I don't really know the first thing about doing comics soooo....... any advice would be great. This was influenced by a comic I just read, Scott Pilgrim, the drawing style, I mean. Too similar?

I like the art and I like the story elements, there's no real punchline though. As a piece of art, I think it stands up pretty well, but as a comic it doesn't really work, y'know? It's more like a short, illustrated story.

Anyway, I do like it, i just wouldn't call it a comic, per-se.

I'll be glad to give a few pointers to you about comic making:
-first thing is, have an idea
-secondly, concept sketches
-third, do a storyboard or quick outline
-fourth, redo your storyboard that you are happy with on another piece of paper for a final copy (I use a drawing pencil for my final copy then go over it with a refillable ink pen, or a rapidopgraph to get technical)
-and finally, show it to people to get their opinion, if it's funny, could use a few things, etc.

When making a comic just remember these:
-determination, determination, and determination
-it also takes motivation from yourself to make something
-and finally, patience, you have to put a lot of effort and detail into each and every panel, if it takes two hours to finish a page then who cares if it looks good, you aren't being timed

Just follow these guidelines and you should be making decent quality comics in no time.

hmmmmm..... yeah i plan on continuing this, almost done with the second page, just yeah it is good to hear you like it. i think i will buy some ink brushes, drawing in photoshop is kinda lame for this sort of thing, i have realized.

dude, falz333, your pages look sweet man. i think that i wanna echo everyone else's comments in the need for an idea. you got AWESOME drawing abilities, but what gets people hooked is either entertainment/story.

if you wanna learn about comics, check out some scott mcloud books! his book "understanding comics" is a great place to start. it's written as a comic and has lots of sweet ideas. your comics are going to rule, dude!

Then you have a flawed definition of the word 'comic'.

Anyway, the comic posted doesn't work as a stand-alone page. If it were part of a series of pages, then sure, maybe it would be fine depending on how it plays out.

By the way, your character looks like Bert.

If you want to get some good stuff for comic making get a, or some, rapidograpph pens, pricey but worth the money.
They are basically just refilable inking pens.

Honestly, I can't figure out what's going on in nearly any of them.

There's a guy with a sword, I guess? He's wearing armour? He says 'fools' at some point? I'm not certain whether he's saying that to someone, or if it's just a general exclamation.

Incidentally, the word 'fools' is about as cliche as it gets. I only really ever see it in parodies or being used by comic relief villains now.

I see the armored guy holding out a great sword (that happens to look like Nightmare's weapon in soul calibur) and he call the army of samurais fool. It looks liked he prepared a stance and launch up from the air showing a look up perspective in which the sun shadow him entirely dark...well that's how I see it.

exactly right! My brother just looked at it and he got it too so I am still unsure as to whether it is clear enough....

I didn't notice how similar he looked to Nightmare until I already was well into first page so..... just hope no one notices/cares when I turn it in

These would work as thumbnails, but I think you need more details. Try using bigger paper and smaller pens.

I can tell what's going on, but it's not immediately obvious.

i'm actually using an ink and brush. but yeah i would like to work bigger
