Yeah, freezing is completely normal on a PC with Windows. Plus when it breaks you get a pretty blue screen.
It sounds like your hard drive might be damaged, you can try replacing it, it's really easy with the newer macbooks. Outside of that if you're out of warranty, maybe start saving for a new macbook :( My condolences to your loss, A good mac is a terrible thing to lose.

I find it shocking your harddrive got busted like it did, was it dropped from a short distance? The Macbooks use an accelerometer to detect sudden drops like that and it shuts off the harddrive, so the only reasonable way this could of happened is if you dropped it from a short distance, while doing something pretty intensive.
Seeing as the average Macbook from the timeframe you mentioned ran at 5400rpm, this harddrive should be an effective replacement, even upgrade, if you were to come across some money. Keep in mind at worst, you can still sell your Macbook for near purchase value, even with that broken harddrive.
I would also recommend investing in an external hard drive. Time Machine is a very useful program that will backup all of your files automatically, so you have access to them in case this happens again.
Chances are your hard drive got screwed when you dropped it. The disk repair fixed it but the hard drive was probably physically damaged.
Things you can do:
Get a blank hard drive, install it and install your original one as a secondary one. Install the OS onto the blank one, recover your data, throw away the old drive. (Price: whatever a new drive is)
If your comp doesn't have room for a second hard drive (which would be really gay), put your drive in another comp (Mac or PC) as a secondary drive, recover your data and get a new drive. (Price: new drive, and possibly having to bug one of your friends)
Take it to the Mac store. (Price: buttfucking expensive)
Get a new comp. (Price: buttfucking expensve-er. PS: buy a PC dammit.)
I dont even.

Thanks to ben and you, I am buying a new better hard drive! Thanks for the advice everyone; and to all the anti mac people, stop being so closed minded, a mac and a pc are both good in their own way

Its hard to when the sole reasons to buy a Mac are "LOOKZ KEWL" and that no viruses are made for them because they represent such a bad market share (They are LESS secure than PC's, a notorious hacker turned white-hat said this bluntly in a rare interview).
Whereas the two main reasons not to are the steep prices and the lack of good graphics card units (Though this is semi-improving).

Lol tech support on NG.That sounds probable...
Anyway, back on topic. I looked into data recovery, and all software requires that the hard disk itself be intact, however that isn't the case with your macbook. I'm sorry, but the chances of your data being recoverable are slim to none.

I'm not experienced with macs, but it sounds like a hard drive problem. Try buying a new hard drive and reinstalling the OS and drivers.
Going to buy a new hard drive in the next few days.

Also, buying armor for your hard drive would be a good idea.

OP, I thought if you broke the HDD you might need some speakers.
I know a guy who sells these IRL for -15% list price, PM me for details.
Good deal.
