Right, so today I bought a female syrian hamster. Now she's cool and all, but she chews the bars of her cage. Now, this is bad for several reasons.
She lives in my room.
It will fuck up her teeth.
It can lead to brain damage.
Now, i've tried blowing gently on her and saying "No", but this only works for a few seconds. She does have a mineral chew, and my sister suggested giving her a stick to chew as well. I tried all of this, to no avail.
What the fuck do I do, Newgrounds?
I ran. I ran until my muscles burned, and my veins pumped battery acid. Then I ran some more.

I would hate to be surrounded by metal bars that taste bad.

In response to the query, I hear there is some stuff you can buy that tastes awful but isn't toxic to hamsters. Smear some of that stuff over the bars and you should be fine. Theoretically.
I forget what it's called though, but from what I recall it works with well with most rodents.
Yeah I was thinking of doing that. I heard lemon juice is easier, though. Luckily she's finally decided to actually go to sleep now, so I cant really get any pictures until she wakes up. Also I think she may have gotten the message, as she did stop for awhile.

Unless you can be there 24/7 to stop her, she won't learn that easily. Give the lemon juice a try, or ask at a pet shop or something.

That's a good point. I've also realised Lemon juice gets sticky, doesn't it? So I don't really want to try that. I'll see how she goes, and if she does continue, ill buy some bitter spray or something. Or maybe some watered down lemon juice.

Probably a good idea to let it stick there for a few days, so she gets the message. After that, just give the cage a thorough cleaning. No harm done in the long run.

Buy a cage made of wood. In that way you'll never worry about hamster's teeth. Works like a charm. ^^

Hum. Actually that's pretty clever, thanks. I think i'll do it now while she's asleep.
Lets hope she hates lemons.

A cage with metal bars is recommended, as Syrian hamsters are natural climbers. The bars allow them to have fun and get exercise.

Rodents' teeth are always growing, so their natural instinct is to chew.
Give your hamster some wooden blocks or something that she can gnaw but won't harm her.
Ask your veterinarian or someone at a pet supply store; they can probably point you to something.

Hamsters are just retarded. I can't stand those stupid things. You're probably going to have to get it a plastic cage that doesn't have any bars because the stupid thing will not stop chewing on those bars. Trust me.

Personally I think the cage must either be too small for your hamster or you haven't provided her with enough hamster toys to give her something else to play with.
BTW hamsters do need to gnaw on stuff so make sure you a wood block or something she can chew away on and get treats that are hard. If they don't gnaw on items then they really will develop problems with their teeth. Their teeth can grow quite long.
The best thing you can do is wiki Syrian hamsters and find out what the best course of action is or take her to the pet shop where you got her from and ask about their behavior.
Don't forget, imagine what it'd be like for you to be stuck in a cage all the time. Hamsters need enjoyment too, get her toys, space, and make sure you play with her enough.

Says the guy who obviously knows nothing on hamster welfare, why they need to chew and why barred cages are always recommended for Syrian hamsters.
Well done you.

She has toys, and this is a fine cage, i bought it from a posh as fuck pet shop and it's supposed to be high quality. I can't get her out her cage yet either, as I have to wait until she's settled in.

Oh yeah you only just got her didn't you?
Stop worrying then. It's natural for the hamster to be confused where they are at first. The last hamsters I got, they both chewed/scratched their ways out of the cardboard boxes they were put into when I bought them at the pet shop because they were confused, then both spent the first evening in their awesome big cage I got them trying to look for a way out.
If your hamster is young and just left it's mother then it's perfectly natural for it to attempt to escape. Give it a few days and it'll settle down fine.

Try coating the bars of the cage with a thin layer of tobassco sauce and make sure the water dropper is working veeeeeeeeerrrrrry slowly. That will teach her.

The stick didn't work? hmm..
I would suggest changing her cage, to a glass or plastic cage..

I have a mouse that used to do this,
some of them grow out of it but you could buy one of those plastic cages, they don't cost much more than barred ones.

Yeah, she's called Persephone. But I call her Persy 'cause it's easier and less weird.
Also, again I dont really want to buy her a plastic aquarium type thing, as it is a lot less fun for her. However, her cage is quite cramped, what with the fact that she has a huge see-saw in there. As far as I can see she bites the cage for about 5 minutes and then stops, then starts again later.
Since this is her first day, I cant really train her or anything, but im going to start straight away tomorrow. She needs to learn this shit now; as the hamster I used to have was a fat little guy that didnt do anything for anybody.
