well for the most part, you will learn with time. but a good basic is places that are large and open need less polys.

Large poly count was a flaw in my early days, I had some models in to the millions of polygons. it would take me a day to render anything.
now I can tackle some complicate stuff doe just a thousand or two.
Your way better than me, my best render was a penguin xD I kinda lost it somewhere. Anyway, I think that adding more details will be good ^^ and it seems that you like guns pretty much :p keep up the good work.

As for the composet, the perspective looks right, and the shadow cast looks right, but the ammo looks a little small, for heavy duty rounds like that they need to be a bit bigger.

But although the composet is good, I must say I do not like the 3d Bullets, mostly because they do not look like real ammo. They look short and stubby, I think a quick remodel is needed on it.
Also you need some global illumination. Right now they lack a shader that makes them look like they belong in the real world. Some global will help you out here
