IMPORTANT POST! READ THIS!
Because there seems to be some misunderstanding about the whole Monochrome thing, and because it will be difficult to create it with traditional mediums, Renae and I have decided that we will edit pictures if we feel they are not monochromatic enough. We will try to stay as close to the original picture, but will edit some colors.
Just to be clear; we want you to make a gradient from white to your chosen colour; you can use any color on that gradient, but no others.
we might post some ways to acheive this in flash or photoshop later
One last thing; Please refrain from tagging your drawings; We will show your username alongside your art in the flash. You can discreetly sign it if you want, or incorporate your name in the actual artwork.

Sorry, not good enough. That clown drawing was close; except for the lined paper and the empty space and all. See if you can make something in that style?

Monochromatic enough? It either is or it isn't, correct? Have fun with that.... =P

wha? ...I'm not editing squat :P If the pic isn't right, it's not in... simple as! .../rawr!! ;D
There are lots of ways to go about this...
If you're using photoshop, you can use the monotone setting.
- Create your image in "Grayscale" mode ...using black as the darkest color and white as the lightest, then go to: Image > Mode > Duotone... Select 'Monotone" from the drop down then click the swatch to pick the color you want to use.
You could flood a layer with your color then use white to paint/draw on the layer above it... or the other way around, paint/draw with one color on white.
In flash you can create a gradient of your color to white, then use any of the tints inbetween (flash spelling).
I dunno what, or even if there's a difference between monochrome and monotone, but what we're going for are images using one color and tints (to white) of that color. Make sense?!? :D

Can I be proud of you? ;P It looks awesome!! IN!
Haha, I'm just a dork and totally know better. =P
Another way to do it in photoshop is to select your white and the other color you want as your 2 color choices and go to Image>adjustments>gradient map
Both give the exact same result
I'd like to get in on this. When's the deadline?

Is there a particular reason why we are not allowed to go in the other direction as well?
E.g.

Well alright then.
As long as there's a reason.

Cause then it wouldn't be monotone.

According to the Wikipedia article on 'monochrome', a 'monochromatic' image can mean an image consisting of shades of a single hue. And in that gradient, all of the colours had the same hue of somewhere around 225 degrees.
Not that that matters if that's not the style that is wanted for the collab.

Then have "your colour" be a darker shade. Then you'll have a wider range of hues. Mainly what they're saying though is that you can't use black.
can we go from black to white, since its only one colour? i know you wouldnt prefer it but would it be allowed
and to all the people, use a darker colour, it gives you more shades to use
I Like M-vero`s suggestion;
Just make a drawing in grayscale; then use the color picker to select white and your chosen color; go to Image>Gradient Map

As I said in the starting post; "This (monochromatic) can mean a number of different things, but for this collab we will use the following interpretation..."
This is a more or less arbitrary decision; but its important that everyone sticks to it.
At 4/15/10 02:39 AM, Ashman wrote: can we go from black to white, since its only one colour? i know you wouldnt prefer it but would it be allowed
No; its not allowed. you can draw in black and white and then edit it though
and to all the people, use a darker colour, it gives you more shades to use.
Using a darker color is possible; but it will make your image look less vibrant; since its less saturated. Also; dont get anywhere near black, or Ill set loose renaenae on you!

I'm in the process of getting my collaboration entry accepted with J-qb and Nae but I'd like to post it here for everyone to ogle.
Took about an 30 minutes in MSPaint and about 15 minutes in Adobe Photoshop CS3. Fairly cartoony, but it's the best I can manage without a tablet. I chose red as my base color. Thanks for looking.
