I think the main reason is because these people do not extend their demographics. They are all aimed really for younger people and it is simply difficult for people not in the target age group to become acquainted and like them. That's what happens to things like Barney the Dinosaur and Teletubbies, they are marketed for a single age group so the majority does not like them.

A lot of bands have small followings and don't try to appeal to a larger following.

This isn't a teenager popcultural thing. It's a female thing. What men do you know, sits outside of a location where a famous person is just to scream their heads off?
