For whatever reason today my FL has been acting up, the "CPU load" icon at the top reads like 49-99 on a blank document...there's no effects or instruments loaded. I don't know why its doing this. I have 2GB of RAM and I'm using ASIO4ALL driver :[ Its hard to even make something because it clicking and lagging. But when I check the "Underruns" it always says ZERO!

Check if it also does that when you're not using ASIO4ALL; otherwise, there lies your problem. I haven't heard many amazing stories about ASIO4ALL.
Also, Fl questions go here.

Try this, this somewhat worked for me when my computer was lagging badly:
1) Right click your taskbar then go to task manager
2) Go to the processes tab and remove all unnessesay processes. If you don't know which ones aren't necessary, type it into google and there's a huge list of websites which can give good info.
Once those are removed, you should get a fair bit of CPU and RAM back so that you can work on your projects again.
Also, doing a disk cleanup and defrag would also help with making your computer work faster.

I was always under the impression that FL's CPU meter only showed the CPU usage of just.. FL studio.
Or am I wrong there?

Either way, freeing up some resources will overall help FL run a little better.

Well also double check all your audio settings. Buffer length needs to be at a respectable height(the higher the easier for your CPU to a certain extent until it gets to be too much), and that you are running interpolation at either 6-point hermite or linear, and that you're using 44.1khz sampling rate. Also if you're using a dual/quad core CPU you should turn on all the checkboxes in the lower section of audio settings. You might want to consider toggling back and forth between your standard sound driver and your asio4all, as that seems to reset the driver connection.

It has happened to me before..
1. Options > Audio Settings > Make sure 'Buffer Length' is maxed. Check 'Use Polling' and 'Use Hardware buffer' and also check 'Safe Overloads'
2. Underneath that in the CPU section, Make sure everything there is checked too.
- Multithreaded Generator Processing
- Multithreaded Mixer Processing
- Smart Disable
- Align Tick Lengths
After you've done that, you should be good to go. All of the above help improve CPU performance... therefore minimising CPU overloads and because you've got 'Safe Overloads' ticked... the screen wont freeze when this happens =D

On the same topic, is it true that FL9 is more CPU-intensive than FL8?

Way to repeat exactly what I said. and NO you shouldn't max out your buffer length. The ideal amount of buffer length can be determined by lowering it until you get distortion in your audio play back, then going up 300-500 from there.

This issue came up for me a while back, and it was mainly because I was trying ASIO4All on my computer. If we can know what soundcard you have, it'd better help us know if it's compatible with Asio.
LogicalDefiance posted some great tips on reducing those pops and the overall CPU usage of FL. Also, ending some processes is a good idea, silly things like "iTunesHelper.exe" and (if you don't use the google toolbarf) "GoogleToolbarNotifier".

Not sure. I think this depends on the CPU. FL9 has more hyperthreading possibilities and might be better for dual core/quad core systems then FL8.

Personally, using FL 8 and FL 9 is very different. FL 8 is more standard looking and straightfoward, and whenever I use it I rarely crash. With FL 9, it's much more aesthetically designed, which may take a lot more CPU, and I crash a lot with FL 9. So that's why I stick with 8.

This is going to sound odd, but...
Have you restarted your comp yet?

Well, are you using Vista/Windows 7? There are some issues to dwm.exe and other processes for audio related, make sure you check it too ^_^

It does, but as A4A spazzes out (which it usually does lol) so does FL's lovely CPU meter.

I'm sorry for bumping this but I really need help.
I've had my Laptop for about a year and a half now:
Model: HP Notebook Dv5
Processor: Intel Core Duo 2.00 GHz
Memory: 4.00 GB Ram
OS: 64 bit Vista
And I have had no problems with CPU. I could have a shit load of ROMplers/VSTs open at once as well as programs such as Skype MSN Google Chrome and other programs all at once and there were no glitches in FL Studio.
I haven't changed anything at all with my setup but for some reason the past 3-4 days my CPU in FL is going crazy. I can barely listen to my project.
My settings have always been what Dannyboi93 had mentioned and now for some reason it doesn't work. I've tried everything. Oh and I just downloaded Vista Service Pack 2 if that makes a difference.
I've closed all my programs only FL is running etc.
If anyone has any idea what could be wrong it would be of great help.
Thanks :)

I get the same thing, so I know how it feels.
I really don't know if the Service Pack 2 is the problem, but all I can tell you is that what really helped me was switching smart disable on for all plugins (just go to Tools > Macros > Switch smart disable for all plugins). This moved my CPU from 60-70% usage to 2-3% usage. That is, unless you've already tried it.
Sorry for probably being useless :3.

Ya that didn't work :(
You think it could be a problem with my soundcard considering this just started happening suddenly?

i had that problem for a long time... the only solution i found: shut down ASIO4ALL... if you let it open, some beats or tracks will give you some trouble... also, knowing your CPU overloads, try to just use FL instead using a lot of things while having FL open... and i know what you feel, but give a try...
