Because it enforces a homophobic culture that justifies violence against those who deviate from the norm -- wherther they're gay or not, just generally deviating from the heteronormative roles for men and women can arn ridicule aand violence. And the same culture is also problematic when growing up gay, bi, lesbian or trans. While there is already a advanced acceptance of non-heterosexual adults, the assumption is that all kids are straight and should conform to the norms.
Seeing the leading cause of death of Queer teenagers is suicide, I would argue there is a problem with the language.

And it's a problem why? Because pressuring people into taking these words to heart is giving these words that much power. They are hurtful, but a good place to get them to stop isn't to argue with people that says them and insult them, it's to stop paying it attention.

Hey, freedom of speech maybe wasn't such a good idea after all, huh? It means even the idiots can flap their jaw... BUT, Start censoring "That's so gay!" and be prepared to censor every phrase that kicks up some shit in this country... and EVERYONE has some kind of problem with SOMETHING. Their is always a group of people trying to keep certain mouths shut. Pretty soon, people will be so sensitive, you won't be able to say anything. They already censor our radio, our televisions, our reading material... So do you people even want freedom of speech? Or is that just something you want when YOU can say what YOU want? Because I can't completely see the point of this arguement. You either give everyone equal rights, and they decide to equally bad mouth each other, OR, you take away all our rights, and be prepared to face the law when you say or do something that you have no right to do... Basically, America, (even though are slogan is so open minded) America falls in the middle. We have some rights, but we have laws that hinder some of our other rights.

Oy...
[Casual homophobia] [enforces heteronormativity] [enforces violent homophobia]. Do I need to spell it out more clearly? get midly annoyed from hearing homophobic slurs being thrown around. I can't get angry everytime I hear one, i wouldn't have time to be anything but angry if I did.
The problem isn't the words and the individual who hears them, it's the words as a part of a bigger cultural phenomenon. It was the same with racism, everyday racist language, by people who didn't really even think twice about it, enforced the idea of racial supremacy, which acted as a breeding ground for racial violence. Prejudice doesn't work without people's passive acceptance of it.

Actually, the word Gay in itself is slanderous if used to describe homosexuals, when you really think about the origins of it's use. People started calling homosexuals gay in a mean-spirited jab, because homosexuals are a little too happy. It really isn't a nice way to describe someone from the get-go, it was started by people saying, "Does that guy seem really gay to you?" Meaning really happy in it's time. And
the word caught on, and homosexuals now adopted the word, and now it is slanderous in a different way. It just took time to achieve that whole different meaning from each generation that has used it.

Because meanings and connnotations of words never change.
And even if it does retain its negative connotation, that doesn't bother me. Nor the fact that people use the word (in whatever context). But I would certainly wish people would stop saying it at the drop of a hat, not thinking twice.

Because you know what? I think you straight people had your fun way too long. I think it's time for everyone to stand up and say "That's so straight!". And not about the good things. About the negative things.
That won't happen because straight people are the majority of the world's population.

You have nothing to prove with your 2010 way of thinking. How negative will the word gay be in 100 years? I would like to venture a guess. In today's society, we have only just started embracing the gay lifestyle. The dinosaurs are dying out. The children have been becoming the future, children who are against all the these old people with their propaganda, and hatred towards races, creeds, and sexual orientations. You might not be alive for it, but maybe our grandchildren will even witness the election of the first gay president of the united states. It WILL happen eventually, especially since we are becoming a society that WANTS to push beyond the barriers of the past. So... The word gay could eventually end up meaning more then happy, or homosexual, or stupid, the next thing you know, it will mean honorable, and brave.

Words are not magic. Of course they're not the sole cause of aall this, but the language is an important part of the Heteronormative model. Language always serves to signle out the default, and see everything else as a deviation from the norm.
Ignoring the slurs is not gonna magic away hate crime. Ignoring the slurs won't magic away the anti-sodommy laws in Muslim countries and (the very Christian) Uganda. There are genuine threats to the existance of non-heterosexual people, and they stem from a culture that sees them as deviations from the norm.

I need to go sleep, so here's my closing statement:
No, I can't beyond doubt prove that casual homophobia feeds the culture of hate that justifies violence and discrimination (though I could try dig up some research, as it has been done). Social sciences aren't like physics or chemistry where you can eliminate variables -- a human exists inside a society, and a society exists in the whole of humanity. You can't isolate these things.
However, it is generally easy to see, that whatever form of extremmism or violence there is in a society, it usually has some level of passive approval of the majority. Wherther it's racism or homophobia, or political extremism or relgious zeal, people won't participate in violence if they don't think they're following what everyone believes to be the right thing to do.
Homophobia isn't that big a social issue in the west anymore. We live in a more accepting age by the year. But it doesn't mean there still aren't issues, or that things can't take a turn for the worse.

You are an idiot. Just because you are straight, doesn't mean you have to hate homosexuals. But you choose to anyway, and attack "gay rights", although I'm pretty sure you have no clue what the hell you are talking about. Wouldn't you feel it was unfair if someone said they were against your rights? Well, that's exactly how it is for gay people to read the bullshit you just typed.

why is "gay rights" such a bad thing? i'd love to hear your reasoning on this, because i have never heard a reasonable argument against gay rights. you'll get some dope whining about some "gay agenda" conspiracy where the liberals and the gays are out to get the poor oppressed straight folk, you may even get religious arguments against it, you'll even have someone attempt to sound scientific, but never anything based in reality!

There is no reason to feel bad for this generation, only for yourself. It is wrong to take the homosexual lifestyle. There I said it. It is wrong. When people say "That's so gay", they are using the ADJECTIVE gay to describe a mixture of wrong/disgusting/dumb in a single word. Just because you are offended by truth does not give you the right to rebel against it.
Dumb bastard.

I believe that if fucking FAGS wouldn't reveal that they were gay (for example the gay pride parade) THEY WOULDN'T BE HATED. BUT NO, THEY NEED TO GET UP ON FLOATS AND SHAKE THEIR ASS AT THE POPULATION BECAUSE THEY ARE GAY.
Why don't we have a fucking straight pride parade? Gays don't deserve rights if they preach their faggatory in everyone's faces.

While it's all fine to debate this topic what is NOT fine is to post like Dante or Toiletpaper where people continously and maliciously use the word "fag" to stir up trouble. Hate gays? Whatever, don't care, we banned that word and using it in a thread like this is just making you an asshole looking for a fight.
You want to play that game? Expect me to ban you. So I'd recommend people start being a little more serious and a little more respectful or stay out of this thread.

Personally, and I say, personally, I'm not a big fan of the existence of homosexuals. I don't hate them though, I just see it as something taboo, something that's impossible to admire, generally something negative. So I use that phrase because I dislike the concept of homosexuality, and so that I'd have one more phrase to add to my glossary of derogatory phrases.
