Apparently even mentally retarded is too harsh of a word nowadays. It seems that they've switched to the word "Intellectually and Developmentally disabled." True. The counter seemed to have gone up by one when you posted that. Maybe it dosn't count the "R part of it because it was in quotes. So that makes it 45 instead of 46. One above 44 when the OP posted. Yea guys. The word is what's in these quotes.

Here's how i see it.

Being Mentally Handicapped is bad, and we should not make fun of those people.

Being Retarded, however, is a choice, and therefore should not be tolerated.

Example: Jimmy was in a car accident, had a massive concussion, and is now mentally Handicapped. His friend Billy is a Frat Boy, and now is retarded.

Maybe it might make a few people think, but it never was going to be very accurate since there are a number of legitimate uses of the word retard. The word will probably become unfashionable in time anyway. I can think of words like it that have long gone. "Flid" and "Spastic" are two that come to mind. I don't suppose most thalydamide victims and Cerebral Palsy people were really that bothered by such words in thier day. Its not what people say that really counts, its what people mean by it.
