Would it be a good thing, and lead to the rise of new developers and creative games? Or would it be a catastrophe, and cause major harm to the industry?
I'm more optimistic about the possible outcome. The destruction of Activision, for example, would end the Call of Duty and Guitar Hero franchises, but open up more space for new franchises and ideas from developers.
If Blizzard went bankrupt it wouldn't effect me whatsoever.
But if VALVe went out of business I would probably destroy everything in my house.

It would be a good and a bad thing. If they ever go backrupt this will cause a major crash in the videogames industry but surely that would force people to puslih their game themselve, thus preserving the originalty (Because, many of the bad video game out here are so because the publisher force the video-game making company to poop shitty game and suck every bits of innovation out of it...)
Pros:
-independant gaming company will have access to the gaming market a lot more easely
-Possible burst of originalty in the gaming community
-Growing of more intelligent publisher like Eidos
Cons:
-Videogame would cost a lot more, since main publisher would be dead
-Videogame company will be forced to sell their product mainly in local state/country, due to lack of main publisher having connection worldwide.

If Valve went bankrupt, a babies would cry and volcanoes will erupt. Tsunamis would flood cities and earthquakes would split the Earth open. Good thing their latest game has sold wonderfully.

Excuse me? That has nothing to do with the price of video games. Publishers and such choose however much they want to charge their games, and that isn't directly influenced by a main publisher. Much like, everyone charges a base price of $59.99 for 360 and PS3 games, but only $49.99 for Wii and PC.

Huh? You've never heard of broadcasting advertisements or commercials?
