Animation Attempt, again... 2010-02-10 20:42:34 Reply

Ok, I posted a (newbie) animation. It was just 2 stick-men fighting, instead they weren't hardy fighting, just moving around.

I had to work on a lot, movements were the main priority.

I looked at a few videos and unfortunately, nothing sunk in.

Anyways, I tried again and really worked on the movements. This was all done by me, I didn't look at a guide to to the animations I did.

I think I improved, it's not brilliant, but it's for better than it once was.

Please leave feedback. :)

Stick-Man Fight

P.s. That's at 18 fps.

The only feedback I can give you is you should work on the bodies.

In there they are unnatural. They don't move like bodies do...I mean...he's shooting a gun and his arms don't move an inch. What the fuck is up with that?
Recoil man, recoil.

Anyway. Look into that, will ya.

Thanks for the feedback. ;)

I'll work on the bodies.

But if you look closely, you can see the recoil. It's just hard to see because it's too fast. After every shot, I moved his arms up, then back down again. I'll post a slower version.

Slow

Hmm, It's not the greatest. Here are some things to improve on.

The movement is still a bit stiff and unnatural. You need to work on this. If you are going for realistic, or cartoony movement, I'm not sure, but try to work on this. All your test should be on working on the stuff that troubles you right now. You shouldn't just jump straight into some guy beating on somebody.

If you are having a bunch of trouble, and you are really into animation, then you NEED the Animators Survival Kit. No money? Download a PDF version off of google. Trust me, it helps.

If you don't feel like getting this book, all the tutorials aren't sinking in, you aren't improving much, then don't give up. A strategy I used to use is I would right click>forward on really well animated movies. Unfortunately not all movies let you do this but in things like Blockhead, you can right click>forward and see all the individual frames. If you want to focus on sticks, I know most of Terkoizes animation lets you right click>forward, I used to do that with his stuff about two years ago. Trust me, this really helps with your timing. It requires a lot of patients though.

Anyway, the point is don't just abandon the tutorials just because the ones you found don't help much. Try getting advice from your favorite animators on things you have trouble with.

Anyway if you took the time to read this, thanks! Also, rotoscoping can help a lot too. Get maybe a youtube video of lets say, a guy running a track. Download it and put it into flash. Then make a tracing of that guy on another layer and fill it in black. Draw him in a walking cycle and cut the video there. maybe that could be the next thing you upload here.

Thanks a lot for your advice. I didn't know about the 'forward'. I'll be sure to try it out.

I'll do some research on tracing and see if I can trace a guy running. Never traced before.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated. :D

When the gun is kicked it shouldn't fly directly up, it should speed along to the side of the screen.

I am so hip.
