The Wikigrounds Club

There have been many attempts already to create a wiki for Newgrounds and each has struggled with up and down popularity. All the others have now gone, but the Wikia one, started a few years ago, has kept going quietly. A month ago I posted a thread in General and attracted quite a bit of attention, the wiki is bigger and better, with many more pages and lots more info. We are building links to the specialist Newgrounds wikis, such as the Madness Combat wiki, which will make us stronger.
In this club, I am hoping that people will give us their thoughts and ideas and we can give you news of the wiki, such as the latest monthly featured subject. We intend to have one subject a month which we will focus on editing and improving. This month it is the BBS- anything you think people will want to know about the BBS. You can just write a note here if you think something needs an article and you are hoping someone will make one, but please check that one is not already there! Better still join up and write the article yourself- if it isn't great someone can improve it.

Probably because the "Wiki" is really already in Lit/Faq

I think the point of the wiki was more community related things that aren't in the FAQ.

Maybe they may want a summary of the Sirtom Incident.

Maybe they want to know more about this "Over 9000" thing people keep talking about.

Maybe they want an unbiased look at major figures on Newgrounds.

Maybe they want to learn more about their favorite Flash Games or Movies.

Newgrounds is a huge website, with hundreds of thousands of submissions, dozens of crews, hundreds of important members, and a rich history. The goal of the wiki is to get that information into one place.

- its a good question and I am glad to explore it with you. Perhaps there is a tendancy to write the wiki for the sake of writing it, possibly without a vision of people actually using it. It is perfectly true that a lot of the pages were written simply by scanning one source of information and writing it down there. If we decide, say, we want a page for every author that has over 30 awards and write the page only by copying the details from their user page, then its true that we haven't achieved much. I am trying to encourage the editors to find out things from a number of sources and get it all together.

We would consider that a page about a User which puts together facts from their user page, together with info from trawling the BBS and other sources, including both positive comments and criticism, would be a worthwhile page, that someone might go to to get a quick summation of a person. If you go to Wikipedia, you don't find things that are not written somewhere else, by definition- "No original research". Its a collection of facts brought together. I think Wade Fulp's page is heading in that direction, do take a look at it, its not finished yet, no wiki ever is!

You could look up something in FAQ and get part of your answer; you could find the rest of your answer in the BBS- or maybe you might get it all in one stop on Wikigrounds. Thats my hope anyway.

You definately have a point, though, the wiki will not be established until people expect to be able to go to it and find answers. Please tell us what kind of things you feel people might expect to find there- what are the things we could do that would NOT just be FAQ?

Jsut explore what we already have- Click "Random Page" if you like- when you read the pages, thoughts will come to you. "Wait a minute- they should say..." If you don't want to write it, just put your thoughts into the talk page- thats what I do sometimes. Never mind what you DON't know, tell us what you DO know. If you look in the talk pages you will find questions we don't know how to answer. We need guys like you!

I totally agree with milinko, Its a great Idea. To be honest I assumed Newgrounds was all ready Wikkied. Been around a long time and seen lots of shit...but so much of my time here was spent drugged,drunk, or depraved of sleep usually do to the two latter reasons. but yea i wil totally check out our wiki

-- It had, previous wiki's had failed and this one was left for dead in 2007, but one good man (InclusiveDisjunction) answered his user page when I asked if there was anyone left and we now have a vibrant little community growing. Please do join us. Come and help this months theme- the BBS

This month's contest is over, and we have a winner! Congratulations milinko959! Milinko first signed up in 2007, but disappeared from Wikigrounds until just two weeks ago. Since then, he's updated the main BBS page, nearly tripled the length of the Review Request Club page, and created a page for the new feature on Newgrounds, the Dumping Grounds! Our next month's contest is Flash Games! Games are an important part of what makes Newgrounds great, but so far, we only have a few articles about games. It's time to change that! Just make an article about a significant Flash Game, or improve an already existing one.

Its best to just start by providing basic info about the game. Just explain what the game is, what the objectives are, its critical reception, and the influence it had on Newgrounds. Afterwards, we can add pictures and the template we've begun using for games. Walkthroughs and guides would be nice, but basic info is our first priority.

-- Although we want to increase our pages and cover the top games, if you feel more inclined to focus on one or two and make them four or five star pages, that is just as valuable. I suggest you explore how we have done other games and work with Salnax at creating one ideal page as an example, with whatever walkthrough and cheats you two feel appropriate. If some people knock up quick pages, then others will build on them, but we also need full pages to show people they can get real info from WikiG.
Well done on the first month. You will have a challenge beating Salnax on games, I reckon. Games I know nothing about, so I will just proof-read your work (also valuable, I might add).
