Could anyone help me out with this? I have a basic character seperated into movie clips, see
here. I know I could just make different keyframes using tweens or frame by frame but I don't understand how to animate him moving around and always keeping all the parts attached to the same place on the body and being able to rotate them around..

if you want to tween any sort of symbol, you need to distribute each one to its own layer.
and let me just say, that looks horrid.

well let me just say I made that in about 3 minutes just to ask this question, I didn't plan on using it.
and I know about tweens the main thing im trying to figure out is how to have the guy walking or moving around and have his arms and legs locked to a certain position as they are also moving.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking so if this isn't what you want forgive me.
You want his legs to be moving, but you want to be able to move the legs around as a whole so that you don't have to animate the legs walking him to every single position, right? A looping animation that you can tween around so it looks like he's walking but without all of the animation.
Put all of the parts into a movie clip (movie clips inside of movie clips) and animate it in there. That way when you move the legs around in the main timeline they'll stay in the same position, but when you play it they'll be walking like they are inside of the movieclip that holds them both.
It's confusing to explain, but you should be able to figure it out.

I guess that's what I'm trying to do, I guess I just didn't think of that, I'll give it a shot.

No, the thing I think he's trying to ask is the option flash CS4 has.
He's talking about bones people. COME ON. Get up with your time.
OP, you know about bones? It's a plugin shit that only Flash CS4 has, where you can create a character and put literally bones in the character so you can make him move like a doll or some shit.
Now careful though, this plugin isn't top noch, and you might experience some difficulty getting used to it.
But it's worth it once you figured it out.
But personally I just stick with changing the little circle( you get when you use the rotate tool) to the place you want it attached to the main body...

Forget my last post.
I was wrong. He's actually trying to make his arm do things while they move in a certain direction.
Wow, explaining flash is hard.

I'll try to explain it better.. If I have a character with all his body parts seperated into seperate movie clips is it possible to drag the whole character around, keep the arms, legs, and head in the same spot, and be able to rotate them seperately. I know it's possible because I see it in every flash movie I just don't know how to do it. Does anyone understand what I'm trying to say? I don't want to have to drag each peice around and estimate if its in the same spot as the last frame

step 1. put all limbs in one movieclip and call that character
step 2. put all limbs on their own layer (so layer 1 should be left arm, layer 2 should be right arm, etc.)
step 3. make some frames (f5) for the duration of the tween (on the layer of the limb you want to move with that tween)
step 4. right-click the frames you just made and select "create motion tween"
step 5. make a keyframe in the tween you just made (f6) on the frame you want the movement to that side to stop (say you have 10 frames for waving its arm, you place it on frame 5 and move it to the most left position and on frame 10 for the most right position)
step 6. on the keyframe you just made, move the movieclip to its final position.
well done, you have created your first motion tween!
step 5 can differ though, cause I can't remember how it was like in flash 8, but I think it is that way

also, you would be better of with frame by frame animations for walking, the character moving with a motion tween.
another tip: this is very handy.
