Personally, I think it's wrong to cut the vocal cords of a dog just because you don't want it barking. If you don't want a pet that barks get a cat, they're a wonderful non-barking pets. To mute the dog like that is like taking away its purpose in life, they use that bark to fend off pests and warn you about intruders in your home.

If you want a dog then you will need to take into consideration of barking. Thats what they do! If you cant train a dog not to bark or use special muzzles/collars/(whatever) and it doesnt have mental issues, then why get a dog. if you want a squeaky animal get a pet mouse. as a hound i bark because of territorial reasons and its pure nature. if barking is illegal put my butt in jail or shoot me, have you ever seen a guard dog try to stop an attack by squeaking? Give me liberty or give me death! I am in no way being mean but its pure insane!

Kind of stupid. It's kind of like cutting a human's vocal chords, which some of us would like to do to others.

IMO you shouldn't debark the dog. Ask a professional to work with the behavioral problem instead. If a kid's vocal chords get cut off for asking too many questions or begging for stuff at the toy store...that wouldn't be right.

How did he get to that point and why did you get him despite the behavioral problem if it wasn't acceptable to you? :O

Nintendogs are very well behaved I think...real dogs aren't usually unless they're well-trained.

Muzzling seems more cruel than debarking.
From what I'm read, it seems to be a low risk surgery and the dogs don't display traumatic stress afterwards. It's not exactly like declawing a cat, where it hurts them, and keeps on hurting for several weeks. And causes them stress beyond that time.

Not that I'm a proponent of debarking, but muzzling seems more cruel. I don't have a dog and never have. But I have birds, and I clip their wings.

This seems to be a more or less equivalent procedure. It doesn't hurt them, and they have more freedom. They can be outside their cages outdoors.

What I don't understand is how parents would mutilate their baby boy's foreskin... but they have a problem with a barking dog.

So.. if a person talks too much, can I do the same thing to them?

Dogs bark to communicate something to others, and most of the time they bark because they want attention, and they're at fault for this?

Fuck that shit, bullshit like a mofo if you ask me. >:[

What's the point of THAT? Unless your dog constantly barks with no purpose and is really annoying, you'll never know when something is wrong. Especially if it's a guard dog.

Debarking dogs is a disgusting and unethical practice and nothing that a bit of professional dog training cant help you fix. Think of it like this, if you had a friend who bugged the shit out of you that badly, because he would not shut up would you get him de-talked, not likely. Seek help from a professional dog trainer and your barking dog problems will be over before you know it.

Oh, and a couple more things you could try are Bark Busters, if you have them in your country, or you can purchase on the internet electronic collar devices that give your dog a small electronic shock when it barks, therefore deterring him from barking and also citronella spray collar that have a similar effect. Good luck with whatever you try.

First thing I thought of.

If you're gonna debark your dog because you don't want to hear it, then you shouldn't have a dog. Dogs have reasons for barking, and people who ignore those reasons and silence their dogs are fools.

Too bad its so annoying, but yeah i do agree, if you don't like barking get a cat or a dog that isn't known to be very vocal, my family once had a dog and we had never heard it bark, ever.

So true.

Debarking dogs is horrendous but lowering the volume of the bark is quite good.

Nothing is a 100% cure for barking problems. Reduced barking should be evident within 7 to 14 days. especially in the amount of barking at night. If barking persists, your dog may have a more serious problem than nuisance and boredom barking. Many dogs require a 4 to 6 week training period.

Imagine the dog was your child, you feed them, you house them, but they talk to much, you have the right to shut them up?

"You may think it's horrible," she said. "But if I had to give up my dog or get the surgery, I would choose the surgery."

Or you could just put up with it. This is like wanting a baby that doesn't cry. If it's so hard to deal with, don't get a dog.

My dog doesn't really bother people when he barks: my dog - being a pug - has the most pathetic of barks - sure, it usually is quite the nuisance when a dog barks on the television and my little rat of a dog feels the need to compete against it - but it's not really a "disturbing the peace" matter. We wouldn't actually get evicted for my dog's hyperactive behaviour, so his vocal cords are fine as they are.

I would have to say that I don't support this idea, because it seems wrong to hurt an animal just so that it won't bother people. I may seem hypocritical as my cat was declawed, but he's a very rough cat who's strong enough without his claws anyway. There's also the idea that pets are fixed, which is probably worse than getting rid of their vocal cords. I guess I would say it should be up to the owner.
