Which Animation to choose...?.. 2010-01-30 14:22:15 Reply

Okay, I have a dude, who has to run. Yep. That's about it.

So, which looks better? The animation on the right? Or the animation on the left? Also, which of these 2 links looks better? First is 42 FPS, other is 24 FPS.

I guess the second one at 24 fps.
But my question is why 42 fps? why not just 30?

really the fps shouldn't matter,(after 24) unless your making a game,
Its all just spacing and timing.

well if it is for a game, Then should be between 40-60 (for reaction times)

and by spacing, I mean how you animate them. How you space the frames.

Here is a example of 3 animations, 12, 30 and 60 fps
all play at about the same speed.

Yeah, I know about spacing :).

The animation of the more block-like stubs was originally done in 24 while the rounder ones were done in 42, so I twiced the duration of each frame. Then, I thought, "Hey, it might look better fast and jerky" as opposed to spaced out and played at 24 speed on 42.

ahh ok, gotcha.
I meant the 24 fps looked better, but if ist for a game, you should go teh 42 route, just space em so it looks more like the 24 fps.

just my opinion.

Okay, gotcha' :)

Also, should I use the box-like gallop one, or the stubby-round waddling one?

neither look like running. the first one is closest, but your half run animation loop doesn't work because you drew one leg over the other on the cross over. If you're going to do half a cycle, there can be no defining lines that show one leg over the other.

gallop seems to fit the feel more and the style.

I think it is funnier that way

You should distribute the weight of the head evenly, so like when he 'Gallops' his head eases back and fourth.

The right one seems like it's walking backwards. O: the legs look really awkward. I would say the left one. The character is fun to watch run because it's silly. That adds to ratings unless it's a serious game.

The one on the left at 24 is the best, in my opinion.

Nothing, just defending myself. You said it looked tweened, I'm telling you it's not.

All 4 of them look incomplete. No I don't mean the lack of a body and arms, I mean the cycles look only half way done. Only one leg is coming up making it look really weird. You can prolly get better help if you post a completed cycle.
The one on the left looks really choppy, but the legs are way better. The one on the right looks a lot smoother, but the legs barely move and look like they're going backwards.
