My view of rap expressed via poem.. or rap (the irony).
There are so many rappers
who write they're shit on the crapper.
They write songs about some bangin' ass
and than smoking some good ol' grass,
drinking colt 45 by the glass,
singing that they got some class,
even though they get paid
to sing about how they got AIDs,
from the one time they got laid
by that pretty girl backstage.
Than a month later they're fame seems to fade,
like the fresh scent from a can of Glade.

Ironically hip-hop was a fleeting name randomly given one day by skat. The original work branched off of the poetry style of "rapping." This style of poetry was spoken to a beat, and existed in Africa for many many years before hip-hop. Continue boring history...
At any rate -- please check out old school before you consider all rap as crap. Artists such as Tupac, Rakim, Immortal Technique, and Nas all used meaningfull words.
Don't believe me? Listen and read the song "Brenda's got a baby" by Tupac.

We can only hope that the progression of the art will slowly take the best of today and of yesterday, and form tomorrow.
