I am Kirbyfemur(AKA Kirby, AKA Kris)
I'm not the hugest writer in the world, but i have written some poems, song lyrics, short stories, and even a screenplay. I am not one for a strict structure for writing, i like to write on a whim. I also have issues writing something over a long period of time, since my ideas tend to come out better if all out at once. But now i'm rambling, hopefully I can contribute to the forum a bit more than just being wasted cyber-space.
I haven't been here in a while, thought I'd browse for a moment before asking what all I missed. Having to work on a senior project at my high school. The product I'm working on..? A website, and considering I'm having to build it from scratch in notepad makes it take longer, been working on lots of short stories though.
How's everyone been?
Hey guys, I've not really written much in my life, except for short stories and essays in school. I've got this (I think) great story planned in my head. I think I've got enough for up to 3-4 long stories (maybe even novel length) all connected.
My imagination isn't a problem, I know what I want to happen. My problem is the writing itself. I've tried dozens of times, I just can't seem to get the right words down. It annoys me so much everytime that I stop writing.
Anybody got any good advice for this problem?

A thesaurus comes in handy, defining words that you don't understand. Umm you read some books to identify your writing style.

Hmm... now that's an idea for a good Xmas present to request. A dictionary / Thesaurus set. It would go well with my book collection.
Hey writing forum lounge peoples.
I'm the owner of a small games website and I've been poking around ways to generate more traffic to my site.
There are no real decent flash game review sites at the moment, and I'm thinking about making a review section of the site, user-generated. The reviews would have to be long and thorough, and an interesting read.
I am also considering making it so that the writer gets paid a certain amount per xxx views, or maybe even just to use it to promote a game they made.
Would anyone here be interested in this? Chuck me a PM if you are.
It's all obviously a very open process is writing creatively, but stressing the importance of a good thesaurus/dictionary set is one of the many things I picked up from my first writing tutor. Specifically with a thesaurus, I very much prefer the Roget variety. More than anything perhaps, they're great for helping you avoid those little beginner mistakes with using words you've looked up improperly, because they are grouped through categories rather than alphabetically. And as a result you'll end up looking up a few words you might not have considered otherwise, which is all good. I use a recently published Penguin one that's not too expensive and which should be available globally in good book stores or online.
Dictionaries (good dictionaries) are even pricier but I think it's worth buying one if you find yourself writing a lot, especially if you prefer to write off the computer as I usually do with the first few drafts.
And we've had, like, two power cuts this week.
High street shops in Britain (eg WH Smith's) tend to do decent offers on dictionaries from time to time.
'Official' dictionaries are bringing in more and more neologisms now too, much to the chagrin of the 'traditional' critics. These dictionaries also tend to have biographical entries for famous people should you need to check a name or date or something.

Well, that's worth considering. How much of a review are you talking for the games themselves? I'd be interested in seeing if we can come to terms on something. I'm not that much of a reviewers, but I dabble and would certainly be able to give critique from a third party stance, with my thoughts designed more to encourage or discourage (more the former, I'd bet) users to take up the game in question.

Since walking down into town is too much effort at the moment, I've looked on Amazon. £30-35 for a Dictionary and Thesaurus. Oxford English varieties.
Anyone sometimes annoyed by prequels in books, games, movies, etc?
Mmm like for example certain book has sequels and trilogy's then all of a sudden we get a prequel. Honestly I feel as if I missed a part of the story that I've should've read about earlier. I don't know but i find it kinda lazy to go back to how it all began when you already have everything.

hey, i'm actually doing the same thing in my school, though i'm a bit curious, what language are you using for it? my teacher swears by ruby, and have you tried scintilla?
Hail comrades. I have pulled myself out of the net to slip a ruffee into this forum. This forum likes to think rape's okay, so i drugged it, kicked it in the asshole and filmed it all. When it wakes, i convinced it that it was raped, and only after they were i a puddle of emotions, do i show them what really happened. Now this forum has a whole new respect for rape victims.
I hate November. If it wasn't for some birthdays, and other things, this month would be intolerable. Writing completely dries up. However, this year IS better than most. i have a few articles i've saved to scrap writing with this month on them, so it can't all be bad.
I'm trying a new thing. A little while ago, i bought a hardcover notebook, which is essentially pleather covered. I've decided to go the old way of writing books and just scribble down a story from start to finish and only afterwards do i put it on the computer.
Didn't do Navowrimo, but considering how that went from 20 to 0 in a few days last year, added onto the large burden of finals, time isn't exactly on my side. Maybe after i graduate.
Also, last night i smoked a pipe and philosophized. i was on top of the world right there.
Anyway, how goes your works in progress, people?

Don't think of your writing as a river. It can't just dry up. The best thing about writing is that you're not doing it unless you're doing it. Sounds like an obvious point to make, but it's remarkable how many people who claim to be writers can't appreciate it. If you want to write, then write. If you don't, then do something else. No one is forcing you to write then and there. Take care of other responsibilties and come back with a less stressed mind.

If I make 50K, it'll be by a whisker's width. We're in the last seven days and I've yet to break 30K. I'm confident, however, with the many days I'll have to work on it, I can get caught up and break 50K, even if I'm up til 11:59pm frantically smashing at my keyboard.

Just basic html actually, nothing really fancy. Also what's ruby and scintilla? Need to post a couple of the short stories I've written while on long hiatus in a new thread sometime, will get to it soon.
Wow! Other people who like literature, never thought I'd see the day. I really want to be an English teacher if I don't make it as a vet I just love spelling, grammar, poems, song writing, story writing EVERYTHING.
Right now I'm writing about 3 songs but I think I'll combine them, I think that's a good idea. Maybe one day I'll get my work out there, maybe not- but hey.

Some questions:
How will the lit portal work? Like the other portals where you upload a submission and people rate it?
How will that work? You just get a piece o' writing and submit? Seems dangerous.
Will the lit portal be more than a fleshed out forum?
Sorry if my questions seem dumb but I wasn't around when the Lit Portal was announced and don't know where to look for answers so I thought I'd try here.
hmmmmm, lit portal,
thy be an enigma!

would I be able to submit this to lp? whats stopping crap from entering? short poems are sometimes good >.>
enough questions.
Despite the name, I'm actually good--Deft, and good!
Giving out reviews to anyone who wants them (exception: poems. I'll find you).

Crap gets into every portal, it's unavoidable. Crap gets into this forums sometimes, it's unavoidable. There's nothing we can do but sift through it all.
As for how the lit portal itself will work... I dunno.
So I'm abut halfway done with my site (text and writing wise anyways) and starting to write the short stories/ fan fictions/ and series stories up tonight and possibly the rest of week. I took note and seem to have in my beta site an empty link for a forum to be placed. So anyone know where I can create a free forum at? Just adding one because it's nice to get feedback on how one is writing and how to improve on it.
Also another note, snow over is nice.
On a secondary note, my one teacher told me to use google site but I haven't really found any so far that would fit for someone simply writing stories.
Hello, writing forum!
I've always loved reading, and any time I had to write something for school my teachers told me I was a good writer. I have been writing stories for two or three years and about three months ago I started writing a novel. I haven't written on it in a while because I got bored with it and I went to work on it one day and realized I had lost almost a full chapter.
The rest of that story you can find here.
Please read that little summary and tell me what you think. I plan on posting here more and posting my stories.
Thanks!
Hey guys! I have the link to Part 2(don't worry there's a link to part 1 in the page) to my Noir Detective story. When your done reading Part 1, be wary of part 2, it has slight racism, but that's due to the time and place, as it takes place during the 50s where african-americans were discriminated against. The story itself has disturbingly violent parts, and also inckudes some hookers, but done't worry! The story so far is good, and I am not done. Here's the link!

I read part one and the story sounds okay, but the grammar wasn't very good. There were a lot of punctuational errors and some spelling mistakes.
I've restarted working on my novel. Not giving anyone any release date (it can be a year like it can be 10), but I hope one day it'll find your hands :)
I love how my ideas evolved into something so huge I'll only be able to write a story inside the story, giving a ton of "deep effect". Obviously I write in French, but I might try to write in English with the help of my Fiancée...

yeah, it's just I was excited and rushed. Please don't let this get in the way of reading Part 2, and eventually Part 3. I loved the idea of your Pablo story, please write the book.

I do plan on reading part 2, and if I like that, part 3 when you post it.
Thanks for what you said about Pablo. I found the file which means I have all of my story and I actually wrote a little bit on it today. I plan on finishing it, but that could take years.
I have the first Chapter of it posted on my profile:
Pablo: Chapter 1
Just if you want to read it (it's not super long.)
I think I'm about to go read part 2 of your story.
Merry Xmas, Newgrounds.
So, did anyone get anything that they can use for their writing this year? I got a dictionary and Thesaurus set from Oxford University Press. Now I can understand what colourful insults I throw at people ;)

I got that Dragon Dictator thing. I tried it out, and it increased my writing speed by a ton. I had to go back and fix stuff though. All in all it's going to be useful. I'd rather feel the keys beneath my finger tips, but when hand cramps set in it'll be a nice break.

Merry belated Xmas to everyone who celebrates it. I really didn't get anything to help me out with writing like Coop asked, but with Xmas break I've finally had time to read some books. Reading is going to make your writing better so it's been nice to be able to relax and read.

Merry Christmas to everyone.
And yeah, I got some notebooks to help jot down ideas on the fly. Always useful.
