A) It was a mindfuck
B) It's based on a book
C) It has an actual storyline, mainly because it's based on a good book.
It's somewhat overrated IMO, lots of people are like "amg fite club is best movie evar"
It's one of the better movies I've seen, but not the best ever.

It's less that 'fight club is graet" that annoys me.
It's more that any impressionable idiot who watches it leaves their couch with a more twisted and cynical view on the world, then they go in their mirror and start spouting rules.

Never watched it, but I hear an actor from said movie is a pretty cool singer.
I say that.

Irony aftershocks resulting from the manliest, most testosterone pumping story of the last decade being written by a gay guy.

I really liked the movie, but it's tainted by Titanic-level hype. Most of my friends hated it, actually.

Because it's so original. When was the last time you saw anything at all like that? I think the closest I can think of is the movie 'Pi' which blew immensely.
Kinda hard to make a case for personal preference though.

I did, seemed very good, but finding out Chuck Palahniuk is gay (and looks like a complete anal fag) definitely changed the perspective...

I gotta admit that Fight Club never appealed to me that much either. Pretty much everyone I know thinks it's one of the best things ever to hit the cinema's, but when I watched it for the first time I was very, very disappointed.
Afterwards I've been in many discussions over it, had tons of explanations for every detail in the story thrown at me - I can only conclude that I have no really good reason to dislike it, but I dislike it anyway. It's just not my thing I guess.
But to say that it sucks goes a little too far if you ask me. If you really think this sucks than I don't think you've seen that many movies, cause there's a loooooot worse out there ;)

Why do you want an explanation on why people like something? They dont need to justify why they like something.
I personally dont care for the movie.

david fincher RARELY makes a bad film; the way it's presented on screen makes it one of the most recognizable films in cinema.
its adoption of the in medias res narrative is a technique that only certain filmmakers have a mind for, and the almost seemingly schizophrenic plot development complements the narrator's bizarre conception of reality.
it's an intriguing film; it's bad by NO means.

This is another case of 'i don't like a movie because it doesn't have masive explosions with one man armies running through them destroying countries with the american flag and cheesy catch phrases.
Although this film is mostly what i said above but it has an amazing plot and clever twists.
Am i right in saying that you think american pie are amazing 10/10 films?
There just funny guy films, not amazing films btw.

Well he shot himself through the side of the mouth. I think in real life that would've almost killed him anyway, but for the story's sake it didn't.

Because it's a good movie? I found the plot very original, it was well shot, well produced, well acted, I don't know what more you could ask for from a film. It's not the best film EVER, but it's definetly a favourite of mine.

I have never seen "Fight Club" before, but I've heard a lot about it. I think the reason FC is so popular is because people are able to associate themselves with the characters. We wish that we could go out and do ridiculous things that no one else knows about to prove our independence. It's also a pretty realistic movie, from what I've heard.

It was a terrible movie, pointless shit.
The entire movie's message was this: HUR HUR
You know what would be really neat? These things actually being noticeable.
As far as basic appeal goes, it's moslty all been said in this thread. The way Chuck Palahniuk presents his stories and the way that David Fincher tends to organise the images in his films (see Seven for instance - you wouldn't struggle to believe that they played with the film in the cinematogprahy stages to desaturate the colours for the neo-noir look) have their own charms that can appreciate for being 'different', which is somewhat the point of the story of Fight Club.
I'm not a huge fan of it either to be honest, but it's an intriguing story. I haven't seen the film in years, but I read the book again not too long ago. Not taking care to avoid spoilers, I think the richest reading of it is a psychological one, a basic psychological one at that. The Narrator, obsessed as he is with context and fitting into a stream that's manufactured to the core with an unhuman capital structure, creates Tyler Durden as his id, to break the mould so to speak. Palahniuk's point was that you need a stable ego to then control and actually accept that id as your own, because everyone. will be thrown in danger otherwise. At many points, the Narrator (superego?) discusses how he almost hates Tyler, driving the stake further, for instance.
The book experiments with dialogue between the two characters, which is one of the finer points of it, I think. I've recommended it to writers who have said they'd like to go a bit further with their speech. Not that that's a mainstream appeal, but whatever.
The story is actually quite interesting when looking at fictional victimisation too. Who are the victims of Fight Club? Young-to-middle-aged, middle-class white men who have just had enough of that awful, unidentifiable structure. What breaks out Tyler Durden initially? A woman. A scary, evil woman who's come along to take what little that poor man had. Very little else is really discussed. I don't remember much mention of homosexuality despite Palahniuk being openly gay either - this story is broad, and it comments greatly on postmodern nihilism to some extent... but it's not a 'real' story. Nothing is strictly 'real' in fiction, but we love judging books like this, a backlash of which leads to the real-life fight clubs mentioned above.
At 1/22/10 02:15 AM, Jamoke wrote: Irony aftershocks resulting from the manliest, most testosterone pumping story of the last decade being written by a gay guy.
I feel sorry for him in a way. No matter how much he is said and admitted to have preferred the film's ending over his own (I call this 'Carrie Syndrome' for writers), displacement isn't a good thing in the ego of any writer, especially when the content and readings are quite volatile (relevant vocab. choice) as they are in Fight Club.
In the version of the book I have, there's a humourous afterword where he's queueing up for some horror-themed amusement ride. The operator says something like, 'the first rule is that you don't scream, the second rule is that you don't scream' (I can't be bothered to check it exactly).
Chuck says, 'I wrote that book.'
The guy says, 'What book?'
Chuck says, 'Fight Club.'
The guy replies, 'There was a book!?'
The next few pages is a sort-of rant about how the fundamentals were lost in the process somewhat. I'll read it again some time.

Hmmm I haven't seen the movie but my boyfriend and a few of his friends wanted to watch it (because it's apparently a crime if you haven't seen it) but I said I didn't want to and left. And now I don't have to! Thanks!

The first time I saw it on AMC I didn't really pay attention to it so I didn't end up loving it. I guess I'll buy the DVD someday and pay more attention.
