Hey everyone, I have a question for you all.

If I make a remix from scratch, do I still need permission from the author?

Thanks for answering :)

Depends on what you are planning to do with said remix. And if you truly remake it from scratch... I.E. create everything yourself, meaning no samples from the original.

Also depends on the license the original song is released under

Yes, no samples from the original.

Yes, no samples from the original.

And what are you planning on doing with this recreation then? Cause really, that is more important than how you remix it. I only really mentioned the making it from scratch bit because you wouldn't be able to upload it here if you used anything from the original.

Well, as long as you did everything yourself, you should be ok then. Covers are allowed (As opposed to true remixes {because true remixes use samples from the original])

What's with the history lesson accompanied by broken links? He only asked if he could upload a remade song here.

This may be obvious, but, you know...

Let me just add that even though you don't need to get any permission, you must still credit the original author and state clearly that your submission is a remix. I remember seeing a few submissions here on NG which were remixes from popular compositions and they didn't state that it was a remix...

So, if you make sure that you're not using any samples from the original, you're making it from scratch, and you're stating clearly that it's a remix, I think you're pretty much in the green.

Oh yeah, and you can't be making any money off it unless you get permission from the author, I believe.

If you remix a copyrighted song using actual audio from the song without explicit permission, you are potentially breaking copyright law, should the copyright owner take offence to your work. If you provide ample credit to the origional artist, however, it could be considered fair use, and the copyright holder is more likely to leave you alone as you are essentially advertising in their favour.

Regardless, Newgrounds policy is not to allow any track with any copyrighted material included. If you really want to remix something and post it on Newgrounds, then the only real way of doing it is to remix a track that is already on the portal, citing the origional artist's audio page.

Well, if you take a look at some very popular, very remix-able songs, you can tell that people don't always ask permission. otherwise if this was a rule, then the original creators would have a lot of PMs asking for their permission.
