oh wait
"The News Tribune of Tacoma reported Monday that donors who are at least 21 years old are given a coupon for a free pint of beer.
Participating pubs and restaurants must wait at least four hours after the blood drive ends before donors can collect their free pint."
This "X thing for beer" has the potential to end all problems on the planet.
File your taxes, get beer!
Pay back your credit cards, get beer!
Vote, get a beer!
Good grades? That's also a beer.
Good driver? Drink up.
No jail time this year? Why, enjoy this tall frosty one sir.
People are finally learning that incentives, no matter how small, work better than charity.
I got a better idea: instead of just beer, you get an eighth of weed to go with it. I mean, after all, you need a beverage to go with your joint.
People will naturally go for selfish gain. Giving blood makes you look like a good and charitable citizen, but the cost (of blood and time) is too much for some people. Now you can look good and get beer! I hope the beer is decent..

Depends on which pubs are participating in the program.

Not only that, but you get to show off at the bar by handing over your blood donor coupon.
As a wise man once said, "Charity is something you do for people while other people are watching"
Personally I think this is a fun (and relatively cheap) way to engage more people in blood drives, especially the younger, healthier population. Good for them.
Since blood centers sell the blood to hospitals anyway, I don't see why they shouldn't be giving something to the people donating. Beer is an interesting incentive.
It has my approval.
Not everything deserves a beer though.

Er.....bad idea.
But in fairness, this is a fair enough trade. Hell, I bet the next step is paying people..........

I get the feeling people will counterfeit those things just like they did with the old subway tickets, and people ended up selling rolls of them on ebay.

Probably. They could look up all the participating pubs and hit them one at a time with fake tickets.
From the freak on your keyboard.
I have one question and one question only.
Do you get the beer before or after you give blood?

There's still controversy over blood banks not accepting donations from homosexuals.
Our growing dependence on laws only shows how uncivilized we are.

Well, it should be a limited time offer, if anything. That way people will be less likely to capitalize on it.

Agreed. What about us teetotalers out there who don't drink beer? Are we out sol, or what?

What about those of us who only accept livestock in exchange for services? This is a travesty. I demand to be paid in hens this instant.
It's not much of a compensation, a pint of beer? That's like 5 bucks, plus it's great for bars because WHO HAS JUST ONE PINT?

Win.
And suddenly blood donations from colleges increased exponentially.
Oh and btw, have fun with all that std screening.

This sorta opens up Pandora's Box though, doesn't it?
Beer is a nice incentive, maybe there can be other incentives......
Free Massages with "special" finish for bone marrow donations?
Lap dances for plasma?

Hahaha i just read that the UK is in the midst of a sperm donor shortage.
Something like that shouldn't even be a problem....

A lot of people fear that one day poor people will be organ banks for the rich or some bullshit.
But so what? There's not going to be a dystopian future where hobbos are harvested for organs to make CEOs of flying car companies live forever. Blood is something the body makes on its own, you can just give homeless people a meal for blood and turn them into walking blood factories. How awesome is that?
For the price of a couple hamburgers you can save lives.
Beer is just more for people who can afford hamburgers but who can't pass up free beer. This happens to be everyone with a penis and a wallet.

and needing to use alcohol as an incentive to get you to donate blood, and thinking its the "best idea" or agreeing with it shows how stupid western culture is, hyperreality dwelling user

They should have some kind of other incentive for the people you listed. I know that when I donated blood, I got a membership card. Basically, I get points every time I donate blood, and those points can be used on various items.

They used to do that. But then they would only attract the homeless and drug addicts who need the money but don't have good blood to give.

A lot of blood centres are non-profits (including the one in the article) and the primary goal is to keep the cost of blood to hospitals low and the supply high enough to cover anyone who needs it.
Still, dollar for dollar they're probably getting more donors with this than they'd be pulling in with regular ad media.
I've donated a bunch of times, I go as often as I can and the buttons and stuff that they give are cool but it's nice to see them giving away something with a bit more value and a bit more appeal as a reward for donations.
What if you do double red cell donations like me? Do you get twice the beer? I don't actually drink beer but that would be fun, I could still share them with my friends. Fun fact - giving blood before drinking a beer makes your blood/alcohol ratio higher than that beer normally would. That's pretty awesome.
They will not give you beer before donating the blood,
because it will make your blood alcholic
and they won`t accept the alcholic blood
so that`s why they give beer after it.

I'd think it was because you could drink the free beer and then leave, but hey, people are honest, right?
