Why is everything in Japan so crazy? I mean for example, click this link.

http://www.nicovideo.jp/

That website is a Japanese version of YouTube. Stack them side by side. The design of the Japanese one is just plain obnoxious. Why are there weird little characters everywhere? Are there really those stereotypical hot Asian hoes all over the internet going So see no go kai lo he! hehehe!!!

I mean really, aren't these people supposed to be reserved, quiet, and respectful?

Oh wait, they invented scat porn.

Nevermind.

Yeah, I bet you do.

There's a law in Japan that forces pornographers to pixel out vags and cocks.

Actually, it is any area that has pubic hair on it. I know, thats why all porn from Japan is fuzzed out. That;s also why you can watch porn on regular cable, at pretty much any time of the day.

You're stereotyping. Silly goose. Japan is a great place.

It's not like you would expect at all. (Unless you visit the tourist parts)

I am just asking about the websites, and why they are so cartoonish and childish. I do plan to visit and maybe even live in Japan one day. First I must learn Japanese. My one friend was in japan, he said that it is pretty much like Germany : either a person speaks English perfectly, or not at all.

I speak German tho

They're on the other side of the world, obviously their culture developed differently after such a long period of isolation. Don't be an ethnocentric ass.

I saw a thumbnail with a hot looking japanese woman innocently looking to the corner.

I was gonna click on it, but I backed out right before, out of fear that she was gonna flash her dick in the video or something.

You're looking at it the wrong way.

.Imagine a person's reserved emotions as a shell. In American culture, this shell is quite thin and easy to bypass, sometimes nonexistent. In Japan, this shell is very, very thick. In train stations and trams for example, people in NYC will be obnoxiously loud, whereas during my stay in Kyoto, no one makes a sound, no one bothers anyone else.

But don't let that fool you. 95% of those business men in the Kyoto trains are going to party harder than 500 Americans combined in the Karaoke buildings. If there's any country who knows what a fuckin party is, who knows what humor is, and can't get sillier, it's Japan by a landslide. And it should make sense, too -- if you spend your entire day as patient as can be, all that energy is bottled up inside, only to pop later that night when everyone's together with their best of friends. It takes a while to get into that "inner circle" of friendship, even in the college I went to, but once you get to be really good friends with a native Japanese, they're an entirely different person.

In terms of the internet, you have a collaboration of Japan's finest "friends," they just don't know each other personally in the real world. So of course, the internet is the biggest party to the otaku crowd.

I've been wanting to go to Japan for quite a while, but I'm afraid that if I go, I will be ignored or discriminated because im not native. I don't know everything about Japan, but in China if you are not a native, you are usually ignored by a lot of people.

I think you should pay some attention to STEM's post, for good reason may I add, via lurking knowledge. There's not much more that I can add to it other than a little more on catering to various subcultures. Popular Japanese websites seem to use this for reasons stated above by STEM, and in a strange way, these things are comparable to the frequent use of dark colours and specific subcultural themes in western websites. As far as today's popular websites go, this might sound odd, but it certainly rang true in 2001, when I started using the Internet. Hell, this is largely used on NG. It's not a direct contrast though, because not many things are.

As my own examples too, I'll throw in the Oricon website and the NTV website. Both show examples of pop culture, and the websites show off some similar colour schemes, but there's still some subcultural reckoning to be sorted out. I think that a western perception difference is that the content here isn't net-specific in either case, though maybe I'm wrong. This could be talked about further, but yeah, hmm, yeah.

I'm not going to bother going into detail on it here, but I know what you're saying in a way. I'll admit now that I love Japanese culture, and it hurts me in a strange way that I can't really get much closer to it. I've personally analysed much of my love as an escapist affection, stemming from interaction with pop culture, history, etc. Not important here however... or is it?

And I can support part of STEM's post with my own example. When I went to Japan, there were plenty of notices everywhere advising against on using phones and so on on public transport (it may be a law in some cases, though I'm not sure about this - I've seen Japanese media mostly refer ot it as a "violation of manners"). My Dad went there before I did on business, and when he used a phone while riding a Shinkansen... well, let's just say that the other passengers were not impressed.

From what I know, this largely applies to the cities, though I certainly don't want to take away your friend's argument. Some areas, like Tokyo's Roppongi, obviously appeal to westerners, with English-themed pubs, diners, bars, etc. but I found this less so in the other areas. Apart from the language, there are a great may other differences too (a motivational speaker once described it as, "Wow, I knew the writing would be different... but they don't even sell the same things in the supermarkert here.", which I can support, and I wasn't there very long, unfortunately).

Not that I'm trying to dissuade you from trying to get connected with Japan. I want both of us to keep learning about it all!

Wow, STEM just got deep.

Good point man. Americans are definitely less reserved in their thinking. I guess seeing as Americans arent so introverted, we think of less things to do. Its the quiet smart Japanese that do the REALLY kinky stuff.

One time, I had this Japanese girl at school try to sick on my toes. It was weird. :-/

I find it funny that people want to live in Japan, if you realise that 99.9% of the people in Japan are originally Japanese, making it probably quite hard to immigrate to that country.

Okay, so it was 98.78%.

I think the reason Japan has ads bombarding everywhere and filling up so much space on the websites is because of the huge fucking letters that require a font size of over 9000 to display the whole damn thing.

Definitely is annoying to read characters with 30+ strokes in a small font. This site shows a kanji with 84 strokes but it's just a technicality, not even used
